'Friendship' fills school supply need

August 23, 2012

As school started the halls of Tuttle Elementary School were full of school supply donations,

“The hallway looked like you were walking through the aisles of Wal-Mart,” said Tuttle Principal DeAnna Finger.

The supplies are going to helping needy students in the school. Even the sixth graders were ready to use the supplies Finger said.

Welcome aboard as memories, history continues

Reunion Day in Newton is a day to salute soldiers and a day of festivities. Many families travel from afar to come “home” and spend Reunion week in the county they grew up in. In addition to the traditional August get-togethers in Newton, there was another special reunion — a reunion of the highest altitude.

Braves score five straight, oust Crawdads in finale

In the thick of the South Atlantic League North Division second-half playoff race, the Hickory Crawdads suffered a setback toward making the postseason on Wednesday.

Trailing 3-1, the Rome Braves scored five-straight runs on their way to a 6-4 matinee victory over the Crawdads at L.P. Frans Stadium in the two team's three-game series finale.

PREP NOTEBOOK: Lady Trojans win their first match

Bandys won its first volleyball game of the season on Wednesday, topping Lincolnton in three-straight sets, 25-17, 25-15 and 25-12.

Sierra Brotherton led the Lady Trojans (1-2) with six aces, seven kills and 14 blocks. Amber Krenson added five aces, five kills and two blocks.

Kayla Champion led Bandys in digs with 13, while Gaosee Vang recorded a team-high 17 assists.

George Dagenhart, 83, of Catawba, went home to be with the Lord after a brief illness on Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2012 at Catawba Valley Medical Center.  The Dagenhart family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home & Cremations in Conover.

2-car wreck injures 4

The search for a new home went severely sour when four people were injured in a two-car collision Wednesday afternoon.

As he was trying to cross U.S. 321 Business and turn left, Michel West pulled into the pat of an oncoming Chevrolet Impala.

"I pulled out of Dogwood Hills," he said. "I didn't see her coming."

Pond probe comes up empty

The report of a dead body in a pond drew investigators to Rock Barn Golf and Spa late Tuesday.

A sonar search of the water didn't reveal anything out of the ordinary, and now sheriff's deputies return their attention to the the unusual circumstances around a Hickory man's disappearance six days ago.

After finishing with a perfect CVAC record last season, the Maiden girls tennis team got off on the right football toward a fourth-straight conference title.

Propelled by doubles play, the Lady Blue Devils notched a pivotal 5-3 CVAC victory over Newton-Conover on Tuesday.

PREP NOTEBOOK: Tigers win home soccer opener

The Fred T. Foard boys soccer team won its home opener against the Crest Chargers in shutout fashion on Tuesday, 2-0.

Mario Carrillo scored on an unassisted goal to open scoring for Foard (4-0-0), while Crest pocketed an own goal for the second netter.
