Red Devils, Tigers get early looks at football squads

Newton-Conover and Fred T. Foard football fans got a first glimpse of their teams during Wednesday's FCA Jamboree hosted by the Tigers.

The Red Devils played against 3A power South Point, while the Tigers competed against 2A West Iredell.

Deglan's walk off homer lifts 'Dads past Tourists, 6-5

Trailing 5-4 entering the bottom of the ninth, Hickory catcher Kellin Deglan smacked a two-run homer to right field to lift the Crawdads to a dramatic 6-5 victory over the visiting Asheville Tourists at L.P. Frans Stadium on Wednesday.

The walkoff by Deglan is the team's eighth this season — the most for the club in any season since 2005.

49ers change their 2013, 2014 football schedules

CHARLOTTE — The Charlotte 49ers are making changes to their 2013 and 2014 football schedules.

Next season's schedule is changing with word of a home game against Division III Wesley College on Nov. 9. That game will take the place of a previously scheduled home contest against North Greenville.

Coach Brad Lambert's team has also moved its 2013 game against Old Dominion to Nov. 16.

Luneze Helms Mathis, 74, of Catawba passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2012 at Palliative Care Center and Hospice of Catawba Valley in Sherrills Ford. The Mathis family entrusted funeral arrangements to Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home and Crematory.

State loans fund $1.1M in water lines

Conover will use $1.1 million in state loans to replace 15,000 feet of water lines in an effort to improve water quality firefighting capabilities throughout the city.

BREAKING: Closed history museum will re-open for Reunion

A broken water line closed the Catawba County Museum of History for two days, but the downtown Newton attraction will re-open in time for Soldiers Reunion.

A cast iron water line feeding the building broke some time Tuesday morning, according to Catawba County Historical Association Executive Director Melinda Herzog.
