Blue Devils start CVAC title defense with victory

After finishing with a perfect CVAC record last season, the Maiden girls tennis team got off on the right football toward a fourth-straight conference title.

Propelled by doubles play, the Lady Blue Devils notched a pivotal 5-3 CVAC victory over Newton-Conover on Tuesday.

The Fred T. Foard boys soccer team won its home opener against the Crest Chargers in shutout fashion on Tuesday, 2-0.

Mario Carrillo scored on an unassisted goal to open scoring for Foard (4-0-0), while Crest pocketed an own goal for the second netter.

Panthers draw record crowd to Wofford College

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — The Carolina Panthers drew record crowds to their training camp at Wofford College this year, Spartanburg tourism officials say.

The team completed training camp at Wofford last week and headed home to Charlotte.

The Spartanburg Convention and Visitors Bureau said Thursday the team attracted more than 44,000 people to the practices between July 27 and Aug. 15.

Truck flips in wreck

Two vehicles collided at the intersection of N.C. 16 bypass and Burris Road Tuesday afternoon.

A Kia Forte was traveling on Burris Road and crossed N.C. 16 after stopping at a stop sign. The driver of the Forte started into traffic at about 15 mph and collided with a Nissan pick-up truck travelling south on N.C. 16, according to Newton police.

Searchers turn to cadaver dog

Catawba County Sheriff’s Department investigators used a cadaver dog to search for a missing Catawba County man on Tuesday. Ken Mohler disappeared last Thursday night from Gregory Wood Products. He reported to work at 4:30 p.m. last Thursday and text his wife around 7:30 p.m. that evening to say he would be home soon, but never made it home.
