In a game that featured three lead changes, two ties and three combined errors by both squads, Savannah got the better of Hickory on the baseball diamond Thursday.
Trailing 4-3 in the top of the seventh, the Sand Gnats (24-28 in the second half, 65-54 overall) powered ahead with a three-run homer by Yucarybert De La Cruz, pulling ahead for good en route to winning 6-5 at L.P. Frans Stadium.
Thursday kicked off the junior varsity football season for some teams in the area.
Three Catawba County schools were in action, including Maiden, Fred T. Foard and Hickory. Below are scores from the county, as well as ones in the surrounding areas.

The defending 2A state volleyball champion Newton-Conover Lady Red Devils opened their season with a loss Thursday at North Iredell, 25-12, 25-6 and 25-10.
The Lady Red Devils (1-0) play again this Saturday at Davidson College's volleyball tournament.
