Pickers have a mall in Maiden

Shelves upon shelves of new and antique items for sale. While looking for a fishing pole, shoppers could end up with an arm full of collectables before they ever leave the store. The new variety mall in Maiden, Pickers Paradise gives the collectors as well as bargain shoppers plenty of merchandise. The grand opening of the new variety mall is this Saturday at noon.

Crawdads win 3-1 in regular season home finale

The Hickory Crawdads kept their playoff hopes alive, treating fans to a win in the team’s regular season home finale Thursday.

Hickory’s Zach Cone and Drew Robinson both homered, while starting pitcher Will Lamb allowed no runs in five innings, helping lift the Crawdads to the 3-1 victory against the Lexington Legends at L.P. Frans Stadium.

St. Stephens lost its opener in the Northwestern 3A/4A conference in four sets to Watauga on Thursday 25-17, 25-19, 21-25 and 25-20.

Breanna Hall and Jenna Boliek led Saint (6-1, 0-1) with seven kills each. Baily Cloninger tallied 13 assists, while Katelyn Houser added 11 assists and eight digs.

Defensively, Ashley Markland recorded 15 digs.

Panthers comeback versus Steelers falls short, 17-16

A 50-yard field goal attempt by Justin Medlock with 32 seconds left sailed wide left, enabling the Pittsburgh Steelers to hold on for the 17-16 victory over the Carolina Panthers in both team's preseason finales on Thursday.

Quarterback Charlie Batch led Pittsburgh (3-1), throwing for 102 yards, including a 37-yard first-quarter touchdown to Emmanuel Sanders.

After beating Cherryville 4-1 earlier this season, the Bunker Hill soccer team was even more impressive in its second outing against the Ironmen.

Paced by a three-goal performance from freshman Richard Xiong, the Bears blanked Cherryville 7-0 in Claremont on Wednesday.
