An argument over dinner sparked a Friday night argument that ended with a Catawba County man shooting his brother to death.

Billy Ray Seagle, 54, is charged with murdering his younger brother Kenneth Franklin Seagle, 53 at their home near Baker’s Mountain Park.

Jr. golfers visit Hampton Heights for seventh event

Thirty-five youth golfers from around Catawba County and surrounding areas took part in the Catawba Valley Junior Golf Tour's seventh event of the season Monday at Hampton Heights Golf Course in Hickory.

The course, which is located behind Lenoir-Rhyne University, played host to cloudy, yet humid weather conditions.

Hornets oust Panthers in season opener, 28-12

For the second-straight season, the Catawba County Hornets faced the Stanly County Panthers in their regular season opener in the Central Carolinas Football League.

Panthers veteran Otah traded to the New York Jets

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — The New York Jets have acquired tackle Jeff Otah from the Carolina Panthers for an undisclosed conditional draft choice.

Otah spent four seasons with the Panthers after being a first-round draft choice (19th overall) in 2008. He started all 29 games that he played.

At 22 years of age, Hickory Crawdads pitcher Jerad Eickhoff is having one of the best seasons on the mound in the South Atlantic League (SAL).

The Evansville, Ind. native is anchoring the Crawdads pitching staff and hoping to lead his team to its ultimate goal — a SAL championship.

Indians hosting co-ed alumni soccer game

St. Stephens High School will be hosting its Sixth Annual Co-Ed Alumni Soccer Game on Saturday, Aug. 4 at the school’s soccer field.

The current St. Stephens boys and girls soccer teams will play in a co-ed scrimmage at 5:15 p.m. at the fields, followed by the co-ed alumni event at 7 p.m.

The soccer field opens up at 5 p.m.
