Panthers DE/OLB Tucker leaves camp, is released

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Carolina Panthers general manager Marty Hurney says defensive end/linebacker Jyles Tucker has left training camp and the team has terminated his contract.

Hurney wouldn't rule out bringing Tucker back at some point.

Former first rounder Zach Cone getting stronger

Coming out of Parkview High School in Lilburn, Ga., Hickory Crawdads center fielder Zach Cone was bred into a baseball dynasty.

Cone, a 6-foot-2, 205-pound center fielder played at the same school that current and former major leaguers Jeff Francoeur (Kansas City), Jeff Keppinger (Tampa Bay) and Clint Sammons (Atlanta Braves) attended.

Ex-Indians RB Jon Sweet transfers to Bunker Hill

An already loaded backfield for Bunker Hill High School's football team gets an added bonus this fall.

St. Stephens running back Jon Sweet, who rushed for 1,454 yards and 16 touchdowns last season for the Indians, has transferred and will play for the Bears this fall.

Sweet joins senior Justin Lynch at Bunker Hill. Lynch rushed for over 1,000 yards for the second-straight season in 2011.

Bobcats schedule heavy with early home games

CHARLOTTE — The Charlotte Bobcats will open the 2012-13 campaign with eight of their first 12 games at home, including the season opener Nov. 2 against the Indiana Pacers.

The Bobcats, coming off the worst season in NBA history, will make two national television appearances on NBA TV and play 18 weekend home dates. The 82-game schedule is split evenly between home and road dates.

Gospel sounds set

The Whisnants and The Mylon Hayes Family will perform at the annual Soldiers Reunion Gospel Music Night on the square in downtown Newton.

Headlining the popular singing event will be The Whisnants, a Morganton-based southern gospel group that originated in 1970. The band has performed throughout the United States and Canada.

Jobless rate goes up slightly

Unemployment climbed in Catawba County and the Hickory Metro during June — and well before news that Gildan Activewear confirmed plans to eliminate 86 jobs from Newton at the end of September.

Focus on DWI drives DA 'to make changes'

When it comes to prosecuting cases of driving while intoxicated, Catawba County's district attorney's office has produced an 86.5 percent conviction rate during the past two years in the county.

For the whole three-county district, James C. Gaither Jr.'s District 25 Attorney's office has secured convictions in 88 percent of the cases it has disposed.
