Margaret Cecelia Clark, age 71, of Newton passed away Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at Brian Center in Hickory. Burke Mortuary in Newton is serving the Clark family.

When Edith Pirkle moved from Lake Norman to Maiden, she said she felt like the town was missing something.

"The town didn't have a parade," she said. "I thought, 'What could I do?' So I started a a parade for the Fourth of July."

The Newton Parks & Recreation Department is planning an “Independence Day Splash Bash” at the city of Newton Swimming Pool on Wednesday, 1-6 p.m.

For the price of pool admission, area residents can visit the pool for a refreshing swim, and join in games, contests, and activities for the entire family.

Cole McGraw's walk gives Hickory 1-0 series lead

A bases-loaded walk by Cole McGraw in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted Hickory Post 48 to a 12-11 victory over Kings Mountain Post 155 on Tuesday at Henkel-Alley Field at the American Legion Fairgrounds.

With the win, Hickory (16-4) takes 1-0 series lead over Kings Mountain (3-12).

'Dads beat 'Hoppers, 7-6, for second-straight day

For the second-straight day, the Hickory Crawdads picked up a 7-6 road victory over the Greensboro Grasshoppers on Tuesday.

The Crawdads remain undefeated in the month of July, improving to 10-3 in the second half and 46-36 overall.

'Dads pitcher Jerad Eickhoff picked up his 10th in of the season — the first Crawdad to accomplish the feat this season.
