At 22 years of age, Hickory Crawdads pitcher Jerad Eickhoff is having one of the best seasons on the mound in the South Atlantic League (SAL).

The Evansville, Ind. native is anchoring the Crawdads pitching staff and hoping to lead his team to its ultimate goal — a SAL championship.

Indians hosting co-ed alumni soccer game

St. Stephens High School will be hosting its Sixth Annual Co-Ed Alumni Soccer Game on Saturday, Aug. 4 at the school’s soccer field.

The current St. Stephens boys and girls soccer teams will play in a co-ed scrimmage at 5:15 p.m. at the fields, followed by the co-ed alumni event at 7 p.m.

The soccer field opens up at 5 p.m.

Police are investigating a rash of 14 car break-ins in Maiden and the surrounding areas.

Maiden Police Chief Tracy Ledford said that thieves broke into 11 vehicles in the Brookwood, Oakwood and Springdale residential developments between Wednesday night and Thursday morning. He estimated the total value of items stolen at about $1,500.

UNC vacating WR Hakeem Nicks' records from '08

CHAPEL HILL — North Carolina is vacating former receiver Hakeem Nicks' statistics from 2008 because he was ineligible that season.

Team spokesman Kevin Best said Friday that Nicks' records and stats from that year will remain in the media guide but be noted with an asterisk.
