4 'Dads help pace Northern All-Stars in 3-2 win

Four of the five Hickory Crawdads All-Star representatives helped pace the Northern Division to the 3-2 victory against the Southern Division in the 2012 SAL All-Star Game, before 6,099 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park in Charleston, S.C. on Tuesday night.

Hickory shortstop Hanser Alberto, who played the entire game, drove in one of the Northern side's runs.

Heat top Thunder 104-98 in Game 4 of NBA Finals

MIAMI, Fla. — LeBron James better get well fast. He's about to play for a championship.

Hardly able to move, James returned from a left leg injury to make the tiebreaking 3-pointer with 2:54 remaining and the Miami Heat held off Russell Westbrook and the Oklahoma City Thunder for a 104-98 victory on Tuesday night and a 3-1 lead in the NBA Finals.

NCHS alumni cook up fund-raising idea

Newton-Conover High School alumni are cooking up a unique fundraiser that could be just the recipe the school's media center needs to get more books.

Red Devil alumni graduating between 1957 and 1995 shared their favorite recipes and compiled a cookbook to raise money in support of current and future Newton-Conover High School students.

County waives landfill fees

In a move that could eliminate abandoned, eyesore buildings and spur new economic development, Catawba County leaders will waive certain landfill and erosion control permit fees beginning July 1.

Man tries to set home on fire

A man tried to set his residence on fire after a disagreement with his mother over the telephone.

Timothy Joseph Fairbanks Jr., 31, was arrested about 5 p.m. Monday afternoon and charged with arson after an incident on Linville Drive in Hickory.

BREAKING: Person on mower hit by car

N.C. 10 is closed near the intersection with Startown Road after a vehicle hit a person on a lawnmower.

Traffic is currently being diverted through the Food Lion shopping center near the Startown crossroads, while emergency responders administer CPR to the victim.

Hickory hammers Burke Co. on diamond, 17-7

Hickory Post 48 earned another victory in the Area IV West Division on Monday, knocking off Burke County Post 21 at Henkel-Alley Field at the American Legion Fairgrounds, 17-7.

Colton Chapman and Davis Hanvey led Post 48 (10-2, 8-1) with three RBIs each, while Jordan Eckerd and Jordan Fulbright added two RBIs each.

AP Sources: Bobcats hire St. John's asst. Dunlap

The Charlotte Bobcats have hired St. John's assistant Mike Dunlap to be their new head coach, two people familiar with the decision said.

The people spoke on condition of anonymity Monday because an official announcement was still being planned for the next two days.

The Charlotte Observer first reported the news.
