After more than four decades spent serving Catawba County Schools students, Joyce Spencer has decided to move on.

The Catawba County Schools board chair for the past six years announced Tuesday that she will not seek a third term among the school system's elected leaders.

Post 48 picks up 10th West Division win over Shelby

Hickory Post 48 continued its hot winning streak, picking up its 10th Area IV West Division victory of the season against Shelby Post 82 on the road Monday, 10-3.

The win against Shelby is Post 48's sixth straight, including four against West Division opponents.

Grayson's HR, 3 RBIs lift Crawdads into first place

June 25, 2012

The Hickory Crawdads moved into first place in the Northern Division Second-Half standings with a 6-2 road victory over the Kannapolis Intimidators on Monday.

Right fielder Chris Grayson led the 'Dads (4-1 in the second half, 40-34 overall) with three RBIs, all of which came on a seventh-inning home run. The bomb was Grayson's eighth of the season.

Francis “Frank” Howard Cogger, age 91, of Conover, passed away on Sunday, June 24, 2012 at Valley Nursing Center in Taylorsville.  The Cogger family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home & Cremation in Hickory.

Blaze destroys barn

A column of black smoke visible from the U.S. 321 intersection with N.C. 10 revealed burning destruction to motorists several miles from Stone Gate Stables in Vale.

Not far from the $1.3 million estate on Malcolm Road, neighbor Allen Biggerstaff knew something was amiss when he heard fire sirens roaring down the private road secluded from N.C. 10.

Whooping cough reported in county

Seven cases of whooping cough have been reported in Catawba County during 2012, including three open cases.

The news comes in the wake of a weekend report that 122 cases of whooping cough, or pertussis, has been reported in Alamance County since December 2011.

Statewide 126 cases of whooping cough were reported during 2011.

Breaking: Blaze destroys barn
