HIckory Post 48 suffers its first loss of the season

After seven-straight wins, Post 48’s first loss was due to happen at any time.

Lincoln County drove in eight runs on 12 hits to come away with the 8-7 win against Hickory on Friday at Henkel-Alley Field at the American Legion Fairgrounds.

With the loss, Post 48 falls to 7-1 on the season.

11 runs, 16 hits doom 'Dads in loss to Drive

The Greenville Drive pounded out 11 runs on 16 hits on Friday to take the series opener against the Hickory Crawdads, picking up an 11-6 victory at L.P. Frans Stadium.

The Drive (31-29) scored in all but three innings of the game, including two runs in the first and sixth.

Greenville's biggest inning came in the seventh when it plated four runs.

DURHAM — Former North Carolina basketball star Pete Brennan, whose crucial shot in the semifinals helped the Tar Heels win the 1957 national championship, died Friday after a fight with cancer, his daughter said.

Powder poses no threat to Maiden church

State tests confirmed a suspicious powder delivered to a Maiden church Thursday did not pose a bioterrorism or health risk.

A suspect package arrived at Providence Road Baptist Church on Thursday, prompting a local and state investigation.

County seeks agriculture sustainability

Catawba County is beginning development of a plan to sustain agricultural land in the county that will focus on economic development for agriculture and the recruitment of young farmers.

The public is invited to submit ideas and suggestions online at http://www.catawbacountync.gov/Planning/Sustainability/ or at a set of public workshops scheduled for July.

Catawba approves budget with split vote

Catawba officials disagreed this week on a budget that cuts overall town fire department spending by more than 18 percent.

With a vote of 3-2, Catawba Town Council approved a $913,567 budget that maintains the town’s current tax rate of 48 cents per $100 of valuation and attempts to cut down on the use of town savings, or its fund balance.

Catawba man charged with murder

A Catawba man has been charged with murder in the death of a local woman found dead inside a burning car Thursday in Sherrills Ford.

Police charged Jermaine Wilkes, 32, of 2282 Edna St. in Catawba, with murder, burning personal property and destroying remains to conceal a death. He is being held in the Catawba County Detention Center under a $150,000 bond.
