Welcome to Catawba County, a wonderful community in the foothills of North Carolina that is within an hour of some of the most beautiful outdoor places and metropolitan locations in the state.
But why leave the county?
About a thousand people lined U.S. 321 Business in Newton during the weekend. Most were protesting anti-gay remarks made by a Maiden preacher earlier this month.
A group of counter protesters also gathered to preach their perspective on what the Bible says.

Coming off a playoff appearance at the state tournament last season, the Hickory American Legion Post 48 baseball team is in rebuilding mode.
Of the 21 players on this year’s team, four are rising sophomores, and six are rising juniors.
For the second-straight day, the CVCC baseball team scored 11 runs, most of them late.
The Bucs won another elimination game in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Div. II World Series against the third-ranked Lackawanna (Pa.) Community College Falcons on Monday, 11-1.
Hickory Post 48's season opener on the road against Rutherford County Post 423 was rained out Monday.
Coach Fore Rembert said the team plans to make up the game, potentially on Friday, June 22.
Post 48 plays its first game of the season Tuesday at 7 p.m. when they host Shelby Post 82 at Henkel-Alley Field at the Hickory American Legion Fairgrounds.
Bessie Caroline Huffman Hunsucker, 68, of Claremont, died Monday, May 28, 2012 at Catawba Valley Medical Center. The Hunsucker family entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home & Cremation in Conover.
Veterans and citizens alike gathered at Claremont City Park on Monday to remember those who died serving this nation.
Claremont Mayor Dave Morrow said the service is not only to honor those veterans who have fallen, but anyone who served the United States.

The Catawba Valley Community College baseball team staved off elimination by winning its first National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Div. II World Series game on Saturday, defeating the No. 7 Community College of Rhode Island Knights, 11-5.
Trailing 5-3, the Bucs (37-16) scored eight runs in their half of the seventh inning, including a grand slam by Brett Huffman.

CONCORD — Kasey Kahne powered to victory in the Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday night, taking NASCAR's longest race for the third time for his first win with Hendrick Motorsports.
Kahne also gave car owner Rick Hendrick his 201st Sprint Cup series victory.
Kahne crossed the finish line nearly 5 seconds ahead of Denny Hamlin. Kyle Busch was third and series points leader Greg Biffle fourth.
