Community mourns mother, child killed in crash

To friends, Tisa Michelle Strickland was “precious” and “a wonderful mother” to her 13-month-old daughter, Payton Michelle Dellinger.

“She was just a wonderful, happy-go-lucky kind of person,” said Chastity McRee, owner of Brookwood Family Restaurant in Maiden. “She had an air about her that she was just full of life, and she loved her little girl.”

Crawdads clip Shorebirds, sweep series

The Hickory Crawdads finished off a road sweep of the Delmarva Shorebirds in Maryland on Wednesday, 3-2.

Crawdads shortstop Luis Sardinas plated Rougned Odor twice in the game, including RBI singles in the sixth and eighth inning.

Odor, the South Atlantic League player of the week for May 21-27, had three of the 'Dads six hits in Wednesday's game.

Church, Gray lift Post 48 past Burke County, 7-5

A day after a dramatic last-inning victory, Post 48 continued its early season roll.

Todd Church pitched a one-hit performance in his 5.2 on the mound, whil Logan Gray hit a two-run homer to lift Hickory Post 48 to a 7-5 victory against Burke County Post 21.

Colton Chapman also went 2-for-4 with two runs scored for Post 48 (2-0).

Hornets will pick No. 1 in NBA Draft, Bobcats No. 2

NEW YORK (AP) — New owner, and now a new star player coming to New Orleans.

And yet another loss — in a historic season full of them — for Michael Jordan and the Charlotte Bobcats.

The Hornets, recently sold by the NBA to Saints owner Tom Benson, won the NBA's draft lottery Wednesday and the No. 1 pick overall — which they almost certainly will use to pick Kentucky star Anthony Davis.

Janice Elaine Robinson, 66, of Maiden, died Wednesday, May 30, 2012, at Palliative CareCenter and Hospice of Sherrills Ford.  The funeral service is Saturday, June 2, 2012 at 4 p.m. at Mt. View Baptist Church in Maiden, with the Rev. Raymond Hamrick officiating.

Vandals targeted Maiden High School's athletic field house this past weekend, police say.

Maiden police officials say they are still investigating the incident, but they think vandals spray-painted the facility over the weekend.

Merchants hope sale attracts crowd to city

Local merchants plan to take advantage of recent city code changes during a downtown sidewalk sale this weekend in Newton.

Organizers say they believe more than 30 local businesses will participate in the inaugural Downtown Newton Merchants Sidewalk Sale scheduled for Friday and Saturday.  

Maiden woman, child killed in crash

N.C. Highway Patrol confirms a Maiden-area woman and her daughter were killed when their car collided head-on with a tractor-trailer truck on N.C. 150 about 8 a.m. Wednesday.

Trooper W.A. Martin told The O-N-E that the driver of a 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix was driving westbound on N.C. 150 at the time of the accident.
