Lady Bears try to turn around playoff luck

After missing the playoffs three-straight seasons from 2008-10, the Bunker Hill softball team begins its second-straight 2A postseason trip Friday.

The Lady Bears, who had a remarkable 2012 campaign, will try to break its recent unlucky past in postseason play.

A goal by Ceana Aguirre in the 60th minute on an assist by Cassidy Winchester was the difference maker, giving the Bandys soccer team a one-goal victory in the first round of the 2A soccer playoffs.

The Lady Trojans' Chandler Griffith pocketed the first goal in the game in the 32nd minute on an assist from Katie Spaulding.

Connecticut Sun waives former UNC star Breland

UNCASVILLE, Conn. — The Connecticut Sun has trimmed its pre-season roster to 13 players by cutting two players, including former North Carolina star Jessica Breland.

The 6-foot-3 Breland was picked up by the Sun last July after being waived by New York, but saw action in just one game.

Budget proposes school funding restoration

Gov. Beverly Perdue's proposed budget adjustments for next year would use most of the proceeds from a sales tax increase to restore cuts that North Carolina school districts have been forced to make since 2009.

Perdue will release her nearly $21 billion plan Thursday, but a document provided by the Democratic governor's administration to reporters Wednesday provided details on her proposal.

Paul Morgan Walker, 80, died Wednesday morning, May 9, 2012, at Hospice of the Catawba Valley, after several months of declining health.  The Walker family entrusted the arrangements to Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home & Crematory in Newton.

Sheriff chases, tackles suspect

Catawba County Sheriff Coy Reid proved he’s still got it Wednesday — by chasing down a burglar on the run.  

Reid, who has served close to 35 years with the sheriff’s department and is serving his second year as sheriff, found himself in the middle of a wild chase Wednesday morning after responding to a breaking and entering call in Hickory.

BREAKING: Maiden chooses former Blue Devil

Searching for its football future, Maiden High School decided to dig into its past.

The school officially announced Wednesday that former assistant coach Frank Snider will lead the Blue Devils football program this season.

Snider replaces James "Buddy" King, who resigned last week after replacing Brian Brown as coach Feb. 14.

Longtime Newton pharmacist dies

Paul Morgan Walker operated a pharmacy in one of downtown Newton's historic business buildings for more than half a century.

He was a leader in the community’s government, civic, business and religious activities throughout those decades.

Walker, who was 80, died Wednesday morning at Hospice of the Catawba Valley after several months of failing health.

Cops stop wrong-way driver on U.S. 321

Authorities prevented danger late Tuesday when they stopped a lost 87-year-old driver who traveled north for at least six miles in the southbound lanes of U.S. 321.

Maiden police officers and Lincoln County sheriff's deputies helped direct the driver, a Salisbury woman, to the roadside about 7:30 p.m. near mile marker 30 in Catawba County.
