GOP incumbents win county commission primary

Catawba County commissioners Barbara Beatty and Dan Hunsucker secured the most votes in Tuesday's Republican primary.

Hunsucker garnered 37 percent of the commission race vote, while Beatty received 30 percent.

Catawba voters approve marriage amendment

Catawba County voters made it clear Tuesday that they support marriage between one man and one woman.

Seventy-four percent of county voters supported the state’s marriage amendment, which states that the only legally recognized union in North Carolina is marriage between one man and one woman.

In a statewide referendum, 60 percent of North Carolinians voted for the amendment.

Romney declared GOP winner in N.C. primary

Mitt Romney has been declared the winner of GOP presidential primaries in North Carolina, Indiana and West Virginia.

The trio is certain to push Romney closer to the 1,144 delegates he needs to clinch the GOP nomination, handing him 100 or so delegates of the 288 he still needs.

None of the outcomes is a surprise. Romney faces no serious challenge to the Republican nomination.

McHenry, Keever wins set House matchup

Incumbent U.S. Rep. Patrick McHenry easily defeated challengers in the Republican primary Tuesday.

Now, he faces N.C. Rep. Patsy Keever in the November general election for the congressional seat. She defeated Asheville Mayor Terry Bellamy and Timothy Murphy in the Democratic primary.

ELECTION 2012: Voters back marriage amendment

North Carolina voters supported an amendment to the state constitution to define marriage between one man and one woman.

The Associated Press called the decision about 9:05 p.m. with voters in favor of the amendment delivering 61 % of the vote.

The Associated Press has declared U.S. Rep. Patrick McHenry in the Republican Primary in the U.S. District 10 race.

Voters request amendment-only ballots

Nonpartisan ballots are in high demand today at Catawba County polling sites, election officials say.

The 26,000 county voters registered without a political party affiliation may choose a ballot at the polls — either Republican, Democrat, Libertarian or nonpartisan.

Police say a Claremont resident helped end a foot chase through town about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday morning, when he knocked out a suspect on the run.
