Catawba County Schools Board of Education unanimously approved the hire of Dr. Dan Brigman as the system's next superintendent, effective July 1.
Brigman currently serves as superintendent of Macon County Schools in far western North Carolina.
He will make $160,000 as CCS' superintendent, according to a four-year contract the board approved Monday night.
Patricia “Pat” Smith, 57, of Claremont, died Sunday, May 6, 2012, at her residence. The Smith family has entrusted the arrangements to Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home in Newton.
Catawba County Commissioners gave formal approval Monday to a health care merger between eight regional counties.
The merger creates Partners Behavioral Health Management, which will oversee delivery of mental health, developmental disability and substance abuse services to citizens in Catawba, Surry, Yadkin, Iredell, Burke, Lincoln, Gaston and Cleveland counties.
Officials expect interest to remain high at the polls Tuesday, as citizens vote on a proposed state marriage amendment and other election primaries.
Voters will decide several primary races at the national, state and local levels. Voting in Catawba County lasts from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at 40 county precincts.

Newton-Conover High School may have its next football coach by early next week.
NCHS Principal Kevin Campbell said Monday the school narrowed its list of candidates to a final name, and officials are nailing down final details with that candidate.
Campbell said those details include a "family matter," but there are no financial issues with contract negotiations.

Maiden High School is searching for a football coach — again.
"Buddy King has asked to be released from his contract," Catawba County Schools Superintendent Glenn Barger confirmed Monday morning. "He started indicating to (Maiden Principal Dwayne Finger) several weeks ago that he had several issues."

As a resident of Maiden and a taxpayer in Catawba County, I along with most of the Maiden High School district want to know what is going on with our football coach, and it is OUR coach since this is our community.

As a native of Catawba County, I would like to voice my support for Barbara Beatty for Catawba County Commissioner. Barbara Beatty has worked tirelessly for the citizens of Catawba County. She provides great constitutent service and works to find solutions to all citizens concerns-large and small.
