A No. 6 seed at last year's Catawba Valley 2A baseball tournament, the Maiden Blue Devils enter Thursday's first round as the No. 2 overall seed.

Authorities arrested a third man Monday night suspected of being involved in a Hickory shootout that injured three men this past weekend.
Hickory police and Catawba County sheriff’s deputies served a warrant at a home at 1463 Peregrine Drive in Catawba. Authorities were searching for Marcus Tyrone Kennedy.

A short segment of Newton’s Heritage Trail Greenway recently reopened after crews spent nearly six months on a culvert replacement project along the three-quarter-mile stretch.
Public works officials say crews replaced about four culverts along Phase II of the greenway that the state identified as not meeting standards during an inspection last year.
The Salvation Army’s Newton thrift store sits in an old “A” Street building with myriad repair needs and cramped parking.

* Jamie Marie Lowery, 35, of Denver, was arrested on burglary-forced entry charges. She was held in the Catawba County Detention Center on a $3,000 secured bond.
The Catawba County home and property Jeremy Mayfield was auctioned on the courthouse steps in Newton on Monday. The bank that loaned the ex-NASCAR driver money for the property won the auction with a $1.725 million bid. Mayfield still owes Carolina Farm Credit about $3 million.Â
