PREP NOTEBOOK: Red Devils golf third after day one

The Newton-Conover golf team stands in third place after the first day of the 2A state golf tournament at Long Leaf Golf and Country Club in Southern Pines.

The Red Devils, the 2012 CVAC champions, carded a team score of 310, seven strokes behind North Lincoln for second place and 20 strokes behind tournament-leading Salisbury.

Crawdads bested by Suns in opener, 5-3

A two-run top of the eighth inning lifted Hagerstown to a 5-3 series-opening victory against the Hickory Crawdads on Monday at L.P. Frans Stadium.

Singles by Hagertown's J.P. Ramirez and Justin Miller plated an RBI each in the inning to lift the Suns (19-15) to the road win.
