Costly error lifts Tigers past Chargers

In a defensive softball game where one play could have decided the outcome in favor of either team, Fred T. Foard got a huge break in the sixth inning against Crest.

With two outs in the sixth and runners on second and third, Lady Chargers pitcher Emily Kale mishandled a ball hit at her by Foard’s Cierra Shull. Kale threw the ball over first baseman Kaylee Wacaster’s head.

All four remaining Catawba County baseball teams were eliminated on Tuesday after the second round of play in the 2A and 3A playoffs.

Hickory and Bunker Hill both lost tough one-run games, 4-3.

The Red Tornadoes (19-8) dropped a road tilt to Asheville (9-15-1), while the Bears fell to East Rutherford in 10 innings.

Skole's 5 RBIs, 2 HRs lift Suns past Crawdads

Hagerstown picked up its second win in a row against the Hickory Crawdads on Tuesday, earning a 12-4 victory at L.P. Frans Stadium.

Matthew Skole led the Suns (20-15) with a five-RBI performance, including two home runs, a double and a single on a 4-for-4 hitting night.

Suns right fielder Steven Souza added three RBIs on a pair of doubles and a home run.

Newton plans service rate hikes

A proposed $38.8 million budget in Newton raises garbage fees $36 per year and increases power rates 6.4 percent for all customers of the city's electric system.

Property tax rates in the city will remain unchanged at 48 cents per $100 valuation.

For a few years it seemed as if Blue Devil athletics were on a declining trend struggling to regain the glories of past seasons. In all the debate over coaching, everyone has overlooked what this bunch of kids has accomplished.

* Michael Emmanuel Tucker, 38, of Hickory, was arrested on a charge of non-support/non-payment of alimony. He was held in the Catawba County Detention Center on a $1,000 secured bond.
