Setzer's late hit completes Maiden comeback

With a 2-0 count, a runner on third base and the game tied 2-2, Maiden's Luke Setzer made a guess at what his next pitch would be.

The junior smacked a ball down the first base line that landed just fair, plating pinch runner Kyle Kelly to give Maiden a dramatic 3-2 home playoff victory against Starmount on Friday night.

PLAYOFFS: 7 county teams move on to second round

Seven of the 10 Catawba County teams in action in the 2A and 3A baseball and softball playoffs have advanced past the first round.

Behind a three-run homer by first baseman Scarlett Harris, the Lady Trojans advanced to the second round of the playoffs with a convincing home win Friday.

Crawdads even series with Sand Gnats, 3-1

The Hickory Crawdads evened their home series with the Savannah Sand Gnats on Friday with a 3-1 victory at L.P. Frans Stadium.

Second baseman Rougned Odor led Hickory (19-13) with a 1-for-3 hitting performance from the plate, which included two RBIs.

Crawdads third baseman Drew Robinson drove in the other run for Hickory.

Downtown Newton joins historic register

Newton learned Friday its downtown historic district is officially included on the National Park Service's National Register of Historic Places.

The N.C. State Historic Preservation Office, which administers the National Register program in the state, announced Newton's inclusion on the list.

Maiden proposes tax drop

Maiden will attempt to lower tax rates once again in the coming fiscal year.

According to a recommended 2012-13 fiscal year budget prepared by Maiden Town Manager Todd Herms, the town will lower its property tax rate by one cent to 38 cents per $100 of valuation.

DMV: Woman wrongfully issued licenses

A Vale woman faces 13 felony charges of wrongfully issuing state driver's licenses at the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles office in Newton.

The DMV License and Theft Bureau arrested Cathy Rudisill, 62, on the charges Monday. Rudisill resigned Wednesday from her position as a DMV license examiner.
