PREP NOTEBOOK: Lady Indians shut out East Gaston

St. Stephens carried momentum from a Friday victory against Fred T. Foard to pick up an impressive 10-0 five-inning win against East Gaston.

The Lady Indians (14-6, 8-2) had 13 hits in their game against the Lady Warriors, including three each by Taylor Lail and Calyn Davis.

Davis led St. Stephens offensively with three RBIs, while Brian Thornburg and Alana Starnes drove in an RBI each.

Bobcats' Thomas ejected for throwing elbow

April 23, 2012

WASHINGTON — Charlotte forward Tyrus Thomas was ejected from the Bobcats' game with the Wizards for throwing an elbow at Washington's James Singleton late in the first quarter on Monday night.

Thomas was dribbling and Singleton was defending him when the Charlotte forward elbowed him with 3.6 seconds remaining in the quarter. He was immediately called for a flagrant 2 foul and ejected.

Help needed to operate free dental clinic

Area dentists are seeking the help of nearly 200 volunteers for an upcoming dental clinic that will look to serve hundreds — possibly even thousands — in need of care.

Fire destroys Newton home

April 23, 2012

Fire destroyed a one-story house Sunday in south Newton.

Fire officials say a blaze completely destroyed the home at about 10 a.m. Sunday morning at 902 Elliot Lane in Newton.

Catawba County fire marshals investigated the scene and traced the fire back to either hot ashes or a discarded cigarette in a trashcan.

Stand Down serves at least 125 needy residents

The inaugural Foothills Homeless Veterans Stand Down served more than 125 veterans this weekend, event officials said Monday.

The 10-county collaborative Stand Down delivered medical screenings, dental care, clothes, food and other forms of assistance to homeless and veteran citizens in the region.

Wind knocks out power in Newton

Strong winds knocked down power lines in South Newton on Monday, leaving businesses, day cares and government agencies without electricity for several hours.

CCS superintendent search continues

Catawba County Schools leaders continue the district's superintendent search process today.

The CCS Board of Education is scheduled to meet in closed session at 11:30 a.m., and a personnel discussion is the only item on a meeting agenda provided by the system.
