Mayfield faces home foreclosure

Former race car driver Jeremy Mayfield may lose his home and land through foreclosure.

A home and more than 450 acres owned by Mayfield and his wife are scheduled to be auctioned April 30.

Foreclosure documents filed in Catawba County show the couple owes Carolina Farm Credit more than $3 million for loans borrowed in 2006.

Three injured in five-car pileup

Police are investigating a five-car crash that sent three people to the hospital about noon Tuesday.

Two people were transported to Catawba Valley Medical Center (CVMC), and one man was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte after the multi-vehicle accident threw two cars over a steep ditch near the intersection of 8th Avenue Southwest and Conover Boulevard West in Conover.

While the rest of Newton is preoccupied with the city’s alleged feral cat problem, I’ve witnessed a far more hair-raising animal issue lately.

Victimized squirrels.

That’s right, squirrels abused by vehicles large and small and, in at least one case, an unfriendly feline along North Main Avenue.

4 Red Devils make college choices official

Newton-Conover seniors Isabella Zaliagiris, Ryan Lampe, Jake Walker and Jervasse Moss made their college decisions on Monday.

Moss and Walker signed with Carson Newman, Zaliagiris is headed to George Mason and Lampe is going to Lees-McRae.

PREP NOTEBOOK: N-C wins third CVAC golf match

Newton-Conover won its third-straight CVAC golf match of the season, edging Maiden out by four strokes at Quaker Meadows golf course in Morganton.

Bunker Hill finished in sixth with a combined team score of 180, while Bandys came in seventh with a score of 211. Host East Burke finished in fifth with a score of 168.

Silas intends to play young guys next 16 games

CHARLOTTE — With the Bobcats out of playoff contention, coach Paul Silas wants to see what his young kids can do the rest of the way.

Silas said Monday he plans to play the team's younger and less experienced players extensively over Charlotte's final 16 games.
