PREP NOTEBOOK: Tigers bounce back on diamond

April 4, 2012

Fred T. Foard bounced back from a defeat Tuesday to Alexander Central, knocking off South Caldwell 4-0.

Lexi Shubert drove in two RBIs on two singles. She also pitched seven innings, striking out 10 and walking four.

Mackenzie Dziendiel also drove in a run in the Foard (13-2) victory.

Smith, Teague leads Hawks past Charlotte

April 4, 2012

ATLANTA — Josh Smith scored 24 points, Jeff Teague added 17 and the Atlanta Hawks beat the woeful Charlotte Bobcats 120-93 on Wednesday night.

Joe Johnson finished with 16 points for Atlanta, which had lost three of four. Hawks coach Larry Drew rested all of his starters in the fourth quarter.

Robert Howard Meade, 77, of Claremont, died Tuesday, April 3, 2012 at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory.  The Meade family has entrusted the funeral arrangement to Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home & Crematory in Newton.

Crews stop fire from reaching house

Newton firefighters stopped a large fire Wednesday afternoon, just before it reached a residential home along Prison Camp Road.

Crews responded to a working fire in an outbuilding behind a home along the 1400 block of Prison Camp Road about 1:42 p.m. A shed was completely engulfed, and heavy smoke filled the air.

Renovated thrift store to boost community

An area ministry's leaders hope a newly renovated thrift store will bring a much-needed boost in revenues that support crisis assistance.

Eastern Catawba Cooperative Christian Ministry (ECCCM) recently finished a complete overhaul of its thrift store in Newton.

Gas station planned for Wal-Mart shopping center

Conover's busy Wal-Mart shopping center may get more crowded by summer.

And city officials expect all those cars to have a place to fuel up.

Murphy Oil USA plans to build a fuel station and convenience store at the corner of N.C. 16 Business and Zelkova Court NW.

Catawba men hit 5 Boone stores

Two Catawba County residents were arrested in Boone this week after stealing goods from five different stores in town.

Boone police say two men from the Conover area stole $3,700 worth of merchandise from several drug and department stores, including CVC Pharmacy, Walgreens, Harris Teeter, Rite-Aid and Food Lion.
