The State Bureau of Investigation is busy in Newton this week as authorities probe separate incidents involving a methamphetamine lab and the suicide of a prisoner at the Catawba County jail.

Newton police say investigators received information that led them to a meth operation late Tuesday night at a home on East 26th Street in the north part of the city.

Rossie Newton, 92, of Catawba, died unexpectedly, Tuesday, April 10, 2012, at his residence.  The Newton family has entrusted the funeral arrangements to Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home & Crematory in Newton.

SBI probes prisoner suicide

The State Bureau of Investigation is probing what appears to be a suicidal death of a prisoner in the Catawba County jail Tuesday night.

The sheriff’s office released information late Tuesday that Jason Samuel Setzer, 38, of Conover, committed suicide by hanging himself inside his jail cell earlier that evening.

Hickory woman first to win new lottery game

A Hickory woman plans to use $100,000 she won in the state education lottery to pay bills and save for the future.

Debbie Keener, a surgical technologist, is the first player to win the top prize in the N.C. Education Lottery's new $100,000 taxes-paid, scratch-off game.

Keener bought her winning ticket at Jack B. Quick on Falls Avenue in Granite Falls.
