Catawba County's week ahead

April 20, 2012

Newton will gather citizens of all races, nationalities and backgrounds Saturday for Unity Day at Southside Park.

Also this week, the world's longest-running "Phantom of the Opera" performer visits Catawba County this week.

And a Saturday race will benefit Balls Creek Elementary School.

This week's criminal convictions

April 20, 2012

The following residents were convicted of felonies this week in Criminal Superior Court:

* Joseph Maurice Craig, 32, of Conover, was convicted of felony possession of firearm by felon, felony failure to report change of address – sex offender, felony possession of cocaine and two counts of felony habitual felon. He was sentenced to 101-134 months in the N.C. Department of Correction.

ACC committee issues public reprimand to UNC

GREENSBORO — The Atlantic Coast Conference's infractions and penalties committee has issued a public reprimand to North Carolina.

The reprimand was announced Friday and came roughly a month after the NCAA's infractions committee imposed sanctions on the Tar Heels' football program.

SUV nearly hits propane tanks

Police say a wreck at a Conover gas station could have been much worse Friday after an elderly woman barely missed hitting dozens of propane tanks.

No one was injured in the wreck.
