PREP NOTEBOOK: Trojans pull comeback over N-C

Leading 5-4 entering the final frame, Newton-Conover surrendered four runs in the seventh inning to drop a heart-breaking CVAC baseball game to the Bandys.

Seth Hubbard and Hunter Harvey each drove in RBIs during the comeback seventh for Trojans. Harvey finished the game 2-for-3 from the plate.

Holden Pender picked up the win on the mound, while Griffin Shepard suffered the loss.

'Dads limit Sand Gnats to two hits in 7-1 win

April 19, 2012

The Hickory Crawdads scattered 13 hits offensively and allowed only two by the Savannah Sand Gnats to earn the 7-1 victory Thursday on the road in South Atlantic League play.

Hickory's Jerad Eickhoff went five innings to earn the win, striking out three batters, walking two and allowing one run on two hits.

READER POLL: County amendment action appropriate?

Catawba County commissioners adopted a resolution this week to support the state's proposed constitutional marriage amendment.

The amendment — which states that the only legally recognized union in North Carolina is marriage between one man and one woman —is on the state's primary election ballot this spring.

Commissioners voted 3-2 to approve the resolution in support of the amendment.

Neil Kenneth Houston, 62, of Claremont, died Tuesday, April 17, 2012, at Alamance Regional Medical Center in Burlington.  The Houston family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home & Cremation in Conover.

Officer, 86, returns to duty

Many people say they missed Newton Police Department officer Evaleene Fowler for the nearly three months she was off the streets this year.

Fowler was walking across "A" Street on Friday, Jan. 13, when she was hit by a Mustang. She was transported to Catawba Valley Medical Center with injuries to her left leg and hip.

Catawba County arrests, incidents

The Catawba County Sheriff's Office reported the following incidents and arrests:

April 17 incidents
* Someone broke into a vehicle at the Interstate 40 westbound rest area in Claremont. A suspect stole $555 worth of goods, including a handbag, wallet, credit and debit cards, an N.C. drivers license and a Verizon wireless cell phone.
