Persistence paid off for Fred T. Foard on the tennis court Monday.

Tied 4-4 with St. Stephens, the doubles team of Samuel Hefner and Russell Michaels rallied from down two points early in their match with Zach Eddins and Nick Linden to pull the 11-9 comeback on “Senior Day.”

Marriage amendment divides county

Catawba County commissioners adopted a resolution Monday in support of the state’s marriage amendment — making history and setting a “precedent” by accepting a resolution brought forth by a citizen.

PREP NOTEBOOK: N-C wins 18-hole match

Newton-Conover won for the fourth time in as many golf matches, capturing the first 18-hole match of the season at Glen Oaks Country Club in Maiden on Monday.

The Red Devils shot 331 as a team, six strokes better than host Maiden.

South Iredell finished third with a 344, while Bunker Hill was fourth with a 354. Bandys tied for last with West Caldwell with a 451.

'Dads down Intimidators in Hickory, 4-3

Rougned Odor hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first, while right fielder Zach Cone drove in two RBIs to lead Hickory to a 4-3 victory against Kannapolis at L.P. Frans Stadium.

Kone hit a solo home run in the sixth inning and plated the eventual game-winning tally in the bottom of the eight inning on a single to shallow left that scored shortstop Luis Sardinas.

Bobby Ray Burgin, 54, of Maiden, died Sunday, April 15, 2012, due to a motorcycle accident.  Burke Mortuary in Maiden is serving the Burgin Family.

Early voting begins Thursday

Early voters may see longer lines at the polls this year because of cuts in state funding, election officials say.

Catawba County voters will be limited to one early voting site in Newton this year, compared to multiple locations in past years.

Zahra playground nearly ready

More than 350 volunteers completed the construction of equipment at the Zahra Baker All Children's Playground in Hickory this past weekend.

Rabies case reported in Newton

Catawba County recorded its fourth rabies case of 2012 last week after two dogs got into a fight with a raccoon that tested positive for the disease.
On Thursday, animal control officers responded to a call that two dogs were observed fighting with the raccoon.
