Trailing by a run in the bottom of the seventh inning, Newton-Conover (3-11) scored seven runs, including two off the bat of shortstop Spencer Travis, to pull off a comeback win against Fred T. Foard in consolation action in the Catawba County Easter Baseball Classic.

Greenville holds on for 4-3 win against 'Dads

The Hickory Crawdads attempted a late comeback with runs in the seventh and eighth, but came up just short against the Greenville Drive, dropping a 4-3 contest Tuesday.

Brian Edward Monahan, 21, of Hickory, died Monday, April 9, 2012, in Commerce, Ga., as a result of injuries suffered in an automobile accident.  Drum Funeral Home in Hickory is handling arrangements.

Thieves pump fuel from tractor-trailers

Police believe high gas prices have sparked a string of fuel larcenies from tractor-trailers in Conover and Claremont.

The two cities have been host to about five incidents of fuel larceny in the past three weeks, with the most recent theft being discovered in Conover on Monday morning.

Volunteers sought for litter-removal effort

Transportation officials are urging Catawba County residents to help in a statewide effort to reduce trash along roadways.

The spring 2012 Litter Sweep begins this weekend across North Carolina, as volunteers, city officials and state workers will all pick up trash on roadsides.

Almost 350 to help build Zahra playground

Nearly 350 volunteers will help build the Zahra Baker All Children’s Playground this week in Hickory.

Businesses, municipalities and donors all helped the Western Catawba County Kiwanis Club raise $200,000 for the playground throughout the past year.

Volunteers and staff will help construct the playground Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Men charged with attempted murder

Police charged two men with attempted murder this week in relation to a March drive-by shooting that wounded a Hickory teenager.

Hickory resident Kasey Sims, 17, was rushed to the hospital March 31 after being shot in his right side near the intersection of N.C. 127 South and 2nd St. SE in Hickory.

Panthers WR Smith agrees to 3-year extension

CHARLOTTE — Wide receiver Steve Smith is now expected to finish his career where it began.

The Panthers have announced Smith has agreed to a three-year contract extension that will keep him with the team through the 2015 season. There is also a team option for the 2016 season.
