When David Shubert stopped coaching the Fred T. Foard softball program in 1996, he didn’t know that he would return 16 years later to coach his daughter, Lexi.
The Shuberts are both members of the Lady Tigers softball program, which is off to an 8-0 start this season, including 3-0 in the Northwestern 3A/4A.
David — who not only coached the Foard softball program (1991-96), but also coached the school’s basketball program from 1992-98 — said he remembered his time as hoops coach, when his young daughter attended the games.

CONCORD — NASCAR's chief appellate officer overturned on Tuesday the bulk of the penalties levied against five-time championship winning crew chief Chad Knaus, who still must pay a $100,000 fine because Jimmie Johnson's car failed the opening day inspection of the Daytona 500.
Chief appellate officer John Middlebrook overturned the six-race suspensions NASCAR handed down to Knaus and car chief Ron Malec, and ruled both instead will be on probation through May 9.
A group of south Newton educators constructed a spelling bee win Tuesday night. They also built support for local education programs in the process.
South Newton Elementary School's "Under Construction" team won the Newton-Conover Education Foundation's (NCEF) annual Red Hot Spelling Bee, out-spelling a variety of school, business and civic-organization teams from across the community.
The event supports education programs in the Newton-Conover community.

School superintendents can rest easier after county commissioners say they intend to fund multiple construction projects for facilities in desperate need of repair.
On Monday night, the Catawba County Board of Commissioners approved two “letters of intent” for funding for Newton-Conover City Schools and Hickory Public Schools.
The letters of intent assure the school systems they will receive funding for the projects, even before the county’s 2012-13 fiscal year budget is finalized.
Area residents can safely dispose of unwanted or expired pharmaceuticals in Conover this week.
Conover Police Department (CPD) will host Operation Medicine Drop on Thursday and Friday near downtown. The event is part of a statewide effort through North Carolina Safe Kids, an organization that seeks to prevent accidental injuries in children.
Conover has hosted the event the past several years, along with 150 other law enforcement departments across the state.
“It’s been a pretty good turnout at our recent events,” said CPD Lt. Mark Stump.
The Catawba County Sheriff's Office reported the recent incidents and arrests.

March 16
* Thieves in Claremont broke into a motor vehicle and stole a rear-window lock off a 1987 Dodge truck.
* Two handguns were stolen from 2852 Rosemont Court in Newton. The firearms were worth about $610 total.
* At 3967 Section House Road in Hickory, thieves broke into a house and stole $2,178 worth of tools. A generator, air compressor, three saws and a 24-volt drill were also stolen.
A Conover man broke into a home, wrecked his get-away vehicle and then found himself in jail overnight Monday. Details in the Tuesday edition of The O-N-E.
The Manufacturing Solutions Center (MSC) not only helps create jobs in Catawba County, the product development and testing company helps businesses around the world.
As work is underway for a new MSC facility on the campus of Conover Station, The O-N-E explores the company and what it does.
Volunteers are sought for a community garden that will grow and harvest produce to help benefit Catawba County residents in need.

Down 2-0 early against Draughn in its singles matches on Monday, the Bunker Hill tennis team rallied behind the play of Stefan Gettys, Braxton Williams and Nick Lee.
The trio, who each fell down a set in their singles matches, came from behind to win the second and third sets, clinching three victories and helping the Bears pick up the 6-3 CVAC win over the Wildcats.
