March 1, 2012

A Newton man is in jail after attacking his friend with a flashlight.

Catawba County sheriff’s deputies arrested Derek Jerome Cox, 31, of 2350 Coley Fish Pond Road in Newton, on Wednesday after he attacked his friend to steal money.

The incident occurred on Tuesday at the residence of 4660 Bear Cove Road in Catawba, said Catawba County Sheriff Coy Reid.

Reid said Cox attacked the male victim while he was putting a large sum of money into a safe. He said Cox first hit the victim with a collapsible baton and then a flash light after that.

Tigers outlast Bears on diamond in 11 innings

March 1, 2012

There was no shortage of runs Wednesday between Fred T. Foard and Bunker Hill on the baseball diamond.

In spite of that offense, a wild pitch by the Bears’ Justin Aiken allowed Foard’s Jordan Fulbright to score, giving the Tigers an 11-10 win in Claremont.

“It was all heart,” said Foard coach Channon Vogel. “These guys just fight and never give up. In our first game this year against Shelby, we were down three runs with two outs in the seventh inning. We came back and won that game. I knew if we stayed in this game, we’d find a way to win.”
