Sherrills Ford fire department's chief recently resigned amid community rumors that the department's board chairman says are untrue.

Keith Bost served Sherrills Ford-Terrell Fire and Rescue for 11 years. Deputy Chief Justin Butler is now in command as the board of directors prepares to search for a new chief.

"He (Bost) has some other opportunities in front of him, and we are losing a good man," said Chuck Connor, chairman of the department's board of directors.

Sewage discharged in Hickory

March 7, 2012

About 7,000 gallons of sewage overflowed in the Section House Road area this week, but Hickory officials say the discharge did not affect area water quality.

The city experienced the overflow due to an obstruction in the sanitary sewer main line, according to a press release from the city of Hickory.

The discharge occurred in the 3900 block of Section House Road, and the sanitary sewer overflow consisted of approximately 7,000 gallons, according to the city.

The overflow was discharged into Herman Branch of the Catawba River basin.

Conover man sentenced for role in drug ring

A Conover man was sentenced to prison this week for his involvement in a methamphetamine operation that stretched from Mexico to Catawba County.

Daniel Ray Chavez, 30, of Conover, originally pleaded guilty Sept. 22, 2010, to firearms charges in relation to the operation. He was sentenced Monday to two years and four months in prison and three years of supervised release.

Trojans hammer Yellow Jackets on diamond

The Bandys baseball team earned a mercy rule victory Tuesday — and then some.

The Trojans (4-0) scored nine runs in the first, six runs in the second and five runs each in the third and fourth innings, scorching visiting Lexington 25-0 on the diamond.

Despite Bandys’ lead throughout the game, coach Frank Porter said his team didn’t change its approach.

PREP NOTEBOOK: Oliver's 8 RBI lift Tigers

Behind a three-hit, eight RBI game from Ashley Oliver, the Lady Tigers won their opening Northwestern conference game in a five-inning, mercy rule fashion.

Oliver connected on a three-run homer in the second inning, an RBI single in the third and a grand slam in the fourth inning to lead the Tigers.

Lexi Shubert also connected on a three-run homer of her own in the first inning. She also pitched five innnings, striking out 13 batters and allowing one hit.

Cierra Shull added a two RBI triple in the third inning, while Mackenzie Dziendziel hit a two RBI double in the third.

Fire chief resigns

The chairman of the Sherrills Ford fire department’s board of directors says it will be difficult to replace the agency's outgoing fire chief.

Keith Bost, an 11-year veteran of Sherrills Ford-Terrell Fire and Rescue (SFTFR), resigned unexpectedly in late February.

In his letter of resignation, Bost said he “cannot be unified in a direction the board wants to take the department,” said Chuck Connor, chairman of the Sherrills Ford-Terrell Fire and Rescue Board of Directors.

Maggette scores 29 as Bobcats dump Magic 100-84

CHARLOTTE — Corey Maggette scored a season-high 29 points, Gerald Henderson hit some big shots in the fourth quarter, and the Charlotte Bobcats overcame a 20-point, first-half deficit to beat the Orlando Magic 100-84 Tuesday night.

The Bobcats came in having lost 21 of their last 22 games, but seemed to get a spark after coach Paul Silas was ejected in the second quarter with the team trailing by 18.

The Bobcats also got a big game from rookie center Bismack Biyombo, who battled toe-to-toe with Dwight Howard and had 10 points and a career-high 15 rebounds.

Gary Dean Medlin, 60, of Claremont, died Monday, March 5, 2012, at Frye Regional Hospital.  Catawba Memorial Park, Funerals & Cremations are providing professional services to the Medlin Family.

Melvin Eugene Little, 75, of East Meadowview Drive in Statesville, died Sunday, March 4, 2012.  Webb Funeral Home in Spruce Pine is assisting the Little family.

Cops seek leads after girl hit by car

Police want your help in identifying the driver of a SUV that fled the scene after slamming into a 12-year-old Claremont girl on Sunday night.

Cassie Cozzen, 12, continues to receive treatment and is in intensive care at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, more than 48 hours after she was hit while walking alongside a rural road.

Cozzen and one other friend were walking from Bunker Hill High School on Oxford School Road about 7 p.m. Sunday when the 12-year-old was struck from behind by a champagne-colored SUV truck.

Cozzen’s friend called 9-1-1.
