“I was excited because it was one of my goals that I set at the beginning of the year,” Walker said. “I wanted to strive to get better, on and off the field, that way in the end I could achieve my goal of playing college ball and becoming an all-star, either through the Shrine Bowl or East-West game.”

Lack of hitting, mistakes doom Red Devils

March 7, 2012

After suffering defeat to Hickory on the baseball diamond once already this season, Newton-Conover was dealt the same fate again on Wednesday.

The Red Devils (1-2) allowed 10 runs to the Red Tornadoes and scored none in a mercy rule loss.

“Our team is so much better than 10-0,” said N-C coach Corey Nunley. “That’s not taking away from coach Craft’s Hickory team. I don’t think they are 10-0 better than us at all. They are good. Nine out of 10 times they might beat us, but we can keep it closer than 10-0.”

Police bust meth lab

March 7, 2012

Police say an anonymous tip helped them bust a small-scale methamphetamine lab on Wednesday in Hickory.

Catawba County sheriff’s deputies evacuated a residential home at 909 32nd St. NE in Hickory about noon Wednesday after they discovered what appeared to be a meth lab inside.

Catawba County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Joel Fish said a citizen’s tip led deputies to the home.

“They saw enough of the items used to make meth that they cleared the residence,” Fish said, adding that deputies later served a search warrant at the home to dispose of the hazardous materials.
