Trio propels Red Devil golf back to top

Hayden Bandy, Alex Hefner and Lee Mitchell weren’t at the same school until this season.

Now, the trio of golfers are leading Newton-Conover to new heights, as the Red Devils head into today’s Catawba County golf championships at Catawba Country Club.

Bandys (6-3, 5-1) won their sixth softball game in a row with a 6-0 shutout victory against East Burke on Wednesday.

Sara Boyd and Rachel Cox each drove in two RBIs, while Breanna Jones and Kathleen Reardon each drove in an RBI.

Taylor Sigmon earned the victory on the mound, striking out three batters, walking two and allowing nine hits.2

Postseason OT adopted for NFL regular season

PALM BEACH, Fla. — Even though the NFL's new rule for postseason overtime has never come into play, it's being expanded for the regular season, too.

NFL owners passed the playoff overtime rule for the regular schedule Wednesday. All games that go into overtime now cannot end on a field goal on the first possession.

When Duane Cozzen heard his daughter had been hit by a car earlier this month, the roles in his life were instantaneously reversed.

When he found out the driver kept going, he couldn’t believe it.

Cozzen, a sergeant with the Claremont Police Department, had worked hit-and-run accidents before, but this was his 12-year-old daughter, Cassie, who was the victim.

Carl Whitener Stewart, 87, of Hickory, died Wednesday, March 28, 2012, at Palliative CareCenter and Hospice of Catawba Valley.  The Stewart family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Conover.

Schools say beef safe

Catawba County school officials say students aren’t eating “pink slime” in their cafeterias.

Administrators and child nutrition directors say their school systems' ground beef does not contain any ammonia-treated beef, which has been scrutinized and called “Pink Slime” by a host of national media outlets and former food scientists in recent weeks.

Maiden students make friends in Canada

Students in Julie Young's second-grade class at Tuttle Elementary School recently established a pen-pal relationship with a class at St. Dominic Savio School in Weyburn, a city of about 10,000 people in the southern region of Canada's Saskatchewan province.

"As a teacher, I like to try to help my students be global," Young said, "and see the world outside Maiden."
