Trio of comebacks spark Bears past Wildcats

Down 2-0 early against Draughn in its singles matches on Monday, the Bunker Hill tennis team rallied behind the play of Stefan Gettys, Braxton Williams and Nick Lee.

The trio, who each fell down a set in their singles matches, came from behind to win the second and third sets, clinching three victories and helping the Bears pick up the 6-3 CVAC win over the Wildcats.

Peter Harrill shot a 73, while teammates Frankie Wyatt and Austin Lackey fired a pair of 75 rounds to lead Hickory to a Northwestern golf match victory on Monday at Catawba Country Club.

The Red Tornadoes shot 302 as a six-person team, finishing three strokes ahead of Alexander Central.

The Cougars' Alex Rhyne earned medalist at the 18-hole match, shooting a 68, which was the only round carded in the 60s.

St. Stephens came in fourth place with a team score of 311, five strokes behind third-place Hibriten. The Indians were led by Austin Russell, who shot a 76.

Holiday, Young lead 76ers past Bobcats 105-80

CHARLOTTE — Jrue Holiday had 20 points and six assists as the first-place Philadelphia 76ers defeated the Charlotte Bobcats 105-80 on Monday night to snap a three-game losing streak and sweep the three-game season series between the teams.

Holiday, coming off a career-high 30 points in Saturday's night loss at Chicago, was 8-of-13 shooting from the field and made all four shots from the free-throw line.

Doug Collins said before the game the key to snapping the losing skid was to get a more balanced scoring attack from his players and he got just that.

Bobby Lee Fulbright, 72, of  Claremont, died Sunday, March 18, 2012, at Frye Regional Medical Center. The Fulbright family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home & Cremation in Conover.

Wilma “Dusty” Dills Hardwick, 61, of Claremont, died Friday, March 16, 2012 unexpectedly at her residence.  The Dills family has entrusted the funeral arrangements to Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home & Crematory in Newton.

Wrecked truck leads cops to thief

A Conover man was arrested overnight Monday after breaking into a home, stealing goods, wrecking his getaway car and fleeing the scene.

Police responded to a traffic accident early Monday morning near the 200 block of 5th Street NE in Conover to find an abandoned Dodge Truck outside of a residential home.

After inspecting the unoccupied vehicle, police found jewelry and other goods lying in the roadway. Police checked several homes in the area and discovered that a home at 202 5th St. NE had been broken into, said Conover Police Sgt. Robert Clark.

Homeless man assaulted, robbed

A man assaulted and robbed a homeless person on Sunday in Newton.
Police say Brandon Horne, 31, of 504 S. Main Ave. in Newton, struck a homeless man in the head outside of Corner Food at 112 E. “D” St. in Newton, stole the man’s bicycle and left the scene.

Newton Police Maj. Kevin Yarborough said Horne and the homeless man, Ronald Ed Hunter, knew each other.

Horne was charged with common law robbery, possession of stolen goods and second-degree trespassing. He is being held on a combined $6,000 bond at the Catawba County Detention Center in Newton.

MSC helps enhance products worldwide

In a rear corner of Catawba Valley Community College's East Campus, a group of men and women provides help for people around the world.

The aid comes in many forms — all of which are unique, some of which are unusual.

All of the work is done to help create jobs through successful manufacturing operations in Catawba County and around the globe.

Community garden effort needs volunteers

A community garden is seeking volunteers to help plant, grow and harvest produce that will benefit Catawba County residents in need.

Catawba County HOPE, or Help Our People Eat, is gearing up for its third year of service in the community.

HOPE was created in 2010 by Christine Cofer, an employee in Catawba County’s finance department.

After being “really hesitant” when starting the program, Cofer’s project has seen stark growth.

Last year, the HOPE gardens harvested and delivered 5,071 pounds of vegetables and fruit, which was an increase of nearly 4,000 pounds from 2010.
