The Catawba County Schools board approved its 2012-13 local budget and capital project requests Monday night, but those plans are far from finalized.
The county manager’s office will now take those requests, tweak them and present them to the Catawba County Board of Commissioners for approval.
The state, which doesn’t finalize its budget until early summer, could also impose changes that would affect how much money goes where.
“It may be the way we recommended it, or it may be a little different,” said CCS Superintendent Glenn Barger. “It just depends on what happens.”
Election filing for county and state government offices ends at noon today.
Local offices up for election this year include the Catawba County register of deeds and two seats on the Catawba County Board of Commissioners.
Area voters will also elect three state legislators this year, with two state House representative spots and one state senator position up for re-election.

Teamwork paid off for the employees of a Hickory food distributor.
A group of 10 employees at Merchants Distributors Inc. won $250,000 in a North Carolina lottery drawing on Friday.
The group calls itself "The MDI 10," and each team member contributes $1 a week to help the group play 10 sets of numbers in Friday lottery drawings.
Gary Baker, a produce and floral buyer for the company, also buys tickets for the group.
Each Friday on his lunch break, he gets a haircut and buys the Mega Millions tickets for that night’s draw.
Newton Public Works will begin construction today on a sewer main and rehabilitation project set to be completed later this summer.
Public Works officials say the project will replace lines along the 300 block of South College Avenue, the 300 block of South Ashe Avenue and the 500 block of South Cline Avenue in Newton.
Newton Public Works crews, along with subcontractor Ronny Turner Construction Company, will work to replace some 4-inch lines with larger 6-inch lines to provide better quantity and pressure to Newton residents, Martin said.

Senior Addison Klutz and sophomore Franklin Wepner joined an elite list of state wrestling champions at Newton-Conover High School on Saturday.
The duo won their respective weight classes to become the 10th and 11th Red Devils, respectively, to win individual state wrestling championships.
The Maiden boys tennis team kicked off its season on the right foot Monday, defeating Lincolnton 6-2 on the hard court.
“I thought we played pretty well today,” said Maiden coach Jon Huffman. “Lincolnton was missing its No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 players. I wish they were at full strength so we could see how we matched up against them. I thought they played us well.”
The Blue Devils host Wilkes Central on Wednesday, a team Huffman said will present a tough test.
The replacement for John Worley as Hickory High School football coach is a familiar rival within the Northwestern conference.
Tom Harper, who has been the head coach at Alexander Central for the past five seasons, takes over the Red Tornadoes’ football program.
A Catawba County man was charged with falsely reporting he was kidnapped.
Storme Goforth’s mother reported him missing Feb. 14.
Goforth turned up at his mother’s workplace Feb. 18 and said he had been kidnapped, according to Long View police.
Lt. R.A. Coffey said an investigation revealed that Goforth had been sleeping in an abandoned house.
“He left home on his own accord,” Coffey said.
Goforth, 22, was charged with filing a false police report, a misdemeanor.
Coffey said Goforth likely faces probation for the charge.
