Indians make 10 treys, advance over Foard

After falling to Foard in a nail-biter on the road a few weeks ago, the St. Stephens boys basketball team eliminated the suspense the second time around.

The Indians (14-9) made 10 three-pointers in Monday’s NWC first round tournament game against the Tigers, including four each by Dillion Spencer and Logan Starkey, lifting them to a 61-48 victory.

St. Stephens coach Murphy Post said it was the second straight game his team found its stroke.

The Newton-Conover and Bandys girls basketball teams picked up victories in Monday’s first round of the Catawba Valley 2A tournament.

The No. 1 Lady Red Devils (22-3) maintained a balanced attack offensively, receiving 16 points from Taylor Petty and Kadesha Gibbs, 15 points from Shynese Whitener and 13 points from Lanecia Williams in their 81-15 win against Bunker Hill.

The No. 8 Bears’ season ends at 0-22 overall.

Margaret Connor and Brittany Harrill led Bunker Hill with four points each.

No. 2 Bandys 77, No. 7 Maiden 29

76ers send Bobcats to 15th straight loss

CHARLOTTE — Lou Williams scored 23 points off the bench as the Philadelphia 76ers built an early lead and held on to send the Charlotte Bobcats to their 15th straight defeat, 98-89 Monday night.

Thaddeus Young added 20 points on 6 of 9 shooting, and Jrue Holiday chipped in with 19 points for the 76ers (20-9).

Williams was averaging 19 points over the previous four games. He stayed hot Monday night, making several big shots including a 3-pointer with 6:11 remaining after the Bobcats had pulled within 71-69.

NCCS school board approves 2012-13 calendar

Newton-Conover City Schools (NCCS) students and teachers will return to the classroom in early August next school year.

The NCCS Board of Education approved a calendar Monday night that will send teachers to school Aug. 2 and students Aug. 7. The last day of class will be May 23, 2013.

The calendar aligns with a schedule Catawba County Schools approved earlier this month.

* The board approved a name change for Newton-Conover Health Science High School.

Three file in county board race

Four candidates filed for county and state office on Tuesday, the official “opening day” for the 2012 election season.

Filing for local, county and state offices started at noon and will continue through Feb. 29. Filing for the Catawba County Schools Board of Education lasts from June 4 to July 6.

Three candidates filed for Catawba County Board of Commissioners, including incumbents Barbara Beatty and Dan Hunsucker. Challenger and former Maiden councilman Kevin Spiva also formally entered the race.

State to lower speed limit on rural road

Transportation officials are granting the wishes of an area resident who voiced safety concerns recently about his rural Catawba County road.

Woman stabbed in Maiden feud

A Maiden woman was hospitalized after being stabbed in the parking lot of an area convenience store.

Police say the stabbing stemmed from a verbal altercation between two women at about 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the Shell gas station at 610 E. Main St. in Maiden.

Francis Blancher, 41, of Maiden, was hospitalized at Carolinas Medical Center's Lincoln campus after being stabbed in the abdomen with a knife.

Blancher was discharged from the hospital as of 9 a.m. Monday, according to a representative of CMC-Lincoln.  

Deputy shoots, kills man

Authorities in Alexander County say a sheriff's deputy shot and killed a man who threatened him with an ax.

Sheriff Chris Bowman said deputies were called Sunday night to a home where the wife of 47-year-old William Frederick Ippolito was staying with a friend.

Ippolito and his wife had recently separated, and Bowman said Ippolito assaulted the friend.

Bowman said Ippolito drove home, and later opened the door holding the ax.
