Brothers kidnap, beat, rob man

Two Hickory brothers are in custody after kidnapping, robbing and beating an employee of McGuire’s Pub in Hickory early Thursday morning.

Hickory Police officials say Martin Cuellar Cervantez, 48, of Hickory, was driving home from his shift as a cook at McGuire’s about 2 a.m. Thursday when he was stopped by two men at the intersection of 2nd Avenue Northeast and North Center Street near downtown.

Cops nab three on drug charges

Three Catawba County residents were among 21 arrested Thursday in the latest Lincoln County Sheriff's Office (LCSO) drug sting.


In coordination with the U.S. Marshal’s Office, LCSO launched “Operation 38 Special” early Thursday morning. Officers sought 38 wanted suspects in the area, and 21 were caught.

Three of the suspects have Catawba County addresses.

* Travis Santel Ramseur, 33, of 306 Kilborne Drive in Newton, is charged with possession with the intent to manufacture, sell and deliver marijuana; and sell and deliver marijuana. His bond is set at $20,000 secured.  

Updated: N.C. Gov. Perdue won't seek re-election

Democratic North Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue, the first woman elected governor in the state, said Thursday she would not seek re-election this year because she believes a bid would make it more difficult to fund education.

Perdue has faced poor poll numbers, continued budget troubles and a campaign investigation while Republicans took over the Legislature last year.

After a night-time crash during a summer district attorneys conference at the beach, Assistant District 25 Attorney Eric Bellas was charged with operating a bicycle while intoxicated. This week, charges against him were dismissed in Brunswick County.

Leading by as many as 12 points, the Lenoir-Rhyne men’s basketball team held off a late charge by Tusculum (7-10, 4-5) to win on Wednesday.

The Bears improve to 9-9 overall and 5-4 in the South Atlantic Conference.
L-R’s Kevin Davis scored 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in the victory.

Tusculum 68, Lenoir-Rhyne 65

Tied with 3:46 left in the game, the Lady Pioneers outscored the Lady Bears 11-8 in the game’s waning moments to pick up the conference victory.

Coaches vs. Cancer game raises almost $600

Last Friday’s fundraiser game between Maiden and Newton-Conover raised almost $600.

All proceeds raised go toward “Coaches vs. Cancer.”

Money was raised through various donations, a 50/50 raffle held in the third quarter of the boys game and $1 half court shots.

The Coaches versus Cancer Council was formed in 1998 to help raise funds through coaches to fight cancer.

The Newton-Conover and Maiden basketball game was one of several area contests that raised money for the organization.

Hickory Christian Academy will raise money Friday at its game against Statesville Christian.

Wizards beat Bobcats 92-75 in Wittman's first game

WASHINGTON — Nick Young scored 20 points, and Andray Blatche had 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Washington Wizards to a 92-75 win over the Charlotte Bobcats on Wednesday night in Randy Wittman's first game as coach.

Wittman took over for the fired Flip Saunders on Tuesday, and guided the team without the benefit of a practice. Saunders' lead assistant has been an NBA coach twice — with Minnesota and Cleveland. His career record improved to 101-207.

He didn't change the starting lineup.

"All these guys get a clean slate with me," Wittman said.

Bellas' DWI case dismissed

A district court judge dismissed a DWI case against Catawba County Assistant District Attorney Eric Bellas on Wednesday in Brunswick County.

Bellas, 45, of Morganton, was charged with DWI during summer 2011 while attending a district attorney’s conference in Sunset Beach. After two continuances, the case was dismissed Wednesday by Judge Nancy Phillips at the Brunswick County Courthouse.

Helen Irene Goble Cook, 73, of Conover, died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2012, at Frye Regional Medical Center.  The Cook family has entrusted the funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Conover.

County weighs alcohol boards merger

Catawba County commissioners are expected to vote Friday on a potential merger between the Catawba County and Taylorsville Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) boards.

If approved, the merger would result in annual savings for the Taylorsville board and create better product selection at its store in Alexander County.

Catawba County would also get .5 percent of the gross annual sales at the Taylorsville store if the merger is approved.

Catawba County’s ABC Board has assisted the Alexander County store since June 2011, when Taylorsville’s ABC Store manager was dismissed.
