GAME OF THE WEEK: Bandys at Newton-Cononver

County rivals Bandys and Newton-Conover collide tonight on the football field at Gurley Stadium for a chance to continue their respective playoff runs.

The game is a rematch of a 35-14 victory by the Red Devils on Sept. 21.

Fort Dobbs offering historic interaction

Fort Dobbs in Statesville will give visitors the chance to interact with military re-enactors across time and learn how their uniforms, equipment and experience have evolved over the past 300 years.  Cannon and small arms demonstrations will also be featured.

Accident

Traffic was backed up for more than a half an hour as Newton Police Department investigated an accident that occurred at the intersection of N.C. 10 and Sigmon Dairy Road. Newton Police reported that Thomas Melvin Peeler Jr., 56 of Newton was charged with a DWI and failure to yield when he turned in front of Steven George Lutz, 58 of Hickory.

Calvin O’Bryan Fuller Jr., infant son of Tiffany Deanne Fuller and Calvin O’Bryan Fuller of Conover, was born and died on Friday, Nov. 2, 2012, at Catawba Valley Medical Center. A graveside service was held Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012, in the Garden of Angels section of Jenkins Cemetery in Newton.

Red Devils avenge 2011 loss, knock out Wolves

The Newton-Conover soccer team made up for a devastating 3-0 loss to Lincolnton in last year’s 2A playoffs.

The Red Devils (15-6-1) led 1-0 at halftime and held off a rally by the Wolves in the second half to come away with a 3-1 road victory to advance to the fourth round of the 2A playoffs.

Lady Bucs knock off Milligan for second win

The Catawba Valley Community College women's basketball team picked up its second win of the season on Wednesday with a 92-47 victory over Milligan College at the Tarlton Complex.

Nika Jones led CVCC (2-0) with 24 points and five steals, while former Newton-Conover standout Kadesha Gibbs added 13 points and seven rebounds.

The Lady Bucs led 48-23 at halftime.

Red Devils hosting Jamboree next two Saturdays

The Newton-Conover High School girls and boys basketball teams will be hosting two “Battle of the Border” Preseason Jamborees the next two Saturdays.

The Red Devils’ boys varsity and junior varsity squads will compete in games this Saturday against five teams, including North Lincoln, Hough, Legacy Charter, Statesville and Emmanuel Prep.

Red Devils soccer team ready for Lincolnton

The Newton-Conover soccer team enters familiar territory on Wednesday.

The Red Devils (14-6-1) travel to Lincolnton today for a third round match up in the 2A state soccer playoffs.

The Wolves (17-4-1) eliminated Newton-Conover from the playoffs last season.

Bobcats lose starting G Henderson for 2-4 weeks

CHARLOTTE — The Bobcats announced starting guard Gerald Henderson could miss approximately 2-4 weeks with a sprained left foot.

Bucs win preseason game against Montreat JV, 92-62

The Catawba Valley Community College men's basketball team defeated the Montreat College junior varsity squad, 92-62, in a preseason match up Tuesday night.

Sophomore Isaiah Cuthbertson scored a game-high 22 points and also grabbed 16 rebounds.

The Bucs opened their preseason last Thursday with a 91-49 victory against Limestone College's JV squad.
