Denver coach John Fox made a successful return against his former team at Bank of America Stadium on Sunday behind offensive, defensive and special teams play.

The Broncos scored touchdowns in all three phases of the game, knocking off the Carolina Panthers 36-14 for their fourth-straight road victory of the season.

Down 11 points at halftime, the Charlotte Bobcats rallied behind Kemba Walker and rookie Michael Kidd-Gilchrist to force overtime and eventually come away with the 101-97 victory against the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday in Charlotte.

SOCCER PLAYOFFS: Two teams reach to West finals

After 110 minutes of soccer competition, the Newton-Conover soccer team held on to knock off its fourth road opponent of the 2A playoffs, topping rival South Iredell in penalty kicks, 5-4.

"It was a great game by both teams," said N-C coach Angelo Palozzi. "It's always tough when someone has to lose on penalty kicks. I'm happy for our seniors and excited to be playing on Wednesday night."

Bears drop Catawba, end 50-year playoff drought

Lenoir-Rhyne shared the South Atlantic Conference football title in 2011 with Mars Hill and were left standing at the altar in the end for a postseason bid.

One season later, the Bears played the role of blushing bride.

Lenoir-Rhyne racked up 513 rushing yards on its way to a 44-14 victory over rival Catawba College on Saturday at Moretz Stadium in Hickory.

Derr tallies 211 yards, 3 TDs; Trojans oust Red Devils

Down its starting running back due to injury, Bandys’ Quiante Derr carried the brunt of the load for the Trojans on the ground against Newton-Conover — and then some.

The sophomore rushed 31 times for 211 yards and three scores, helping Bandys eliminate the CVAC champion Red Devils from the 2AA playoffs with a 49-24 victory at Gurley Stadium on Friday.

Montgomery leads Bulldogs past Tornadoes, 28-13

Behind two rushing touchdowns from quarterback Chris Montgomery, the Burns Bulldogs eliminated Hickory from the 3A playoffs for the second-straight season, 28-13, in Kings Mountain on Friday.

The Bulldogs (10-3), who advance to the regional quarterfinals for the third time in the past four years, host Freedom (12-1) in the 3A third round next Friday.

Lady Bucs rallly past Clinton Junior College, 71-58

Rallying from down two points at halftime, the Catawba Valley Community College women's basketball team remained undefeated with a 71-58 victory against Clinton Junior College on Friday at the Tarlton Complex.

Nika Jones led CVCC with 22 points, while Gabrielle McClain added 15 points.

The Lady Bucs (3-0) trailed 34-32 at the break to the Lady Bears (1-2).

Digging in to the future

Ground was broken on Friday, Nov. 9 for the new South Newton Elementary school.  The $11.5 million dollar project will not utilize existing structures and are adding several new state of the art facilities.

“The investment we begin today in this new school is a wise one for the future,” said Newton-Conover City Schools Superintendent Dr. Barry Redmond.

Shooting suspect arrested, charged

A Catawba man was arrested Thursday and charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

Ramono Dewan Reid, 29, was arrested after Hickory police received a call around midnight reporting a fight involving a crowd in front of an apartment building on Fifth Avenue, NW, according to Hickory Police Department records.

CVCC athletics back in the nationwide spotlight again

For the second time in the 2012 calendar year, a sports team from Catawba Valley Community College prepares to take the national stage.

The Lady Bucs volleyball program won the Region X/District P tournament last weekend at Brunswick Community College to advance to the National Junior College Athletic Association National Championships in Toledo, Ohio from Nov. 15-17.
