Houck arrested on sex charges

November 14, 2012

A Conover man was arrested by Hickory Police Monday on two felony charges involving sexual assault against children.

Kelly Martin Houck Jr., of 940 27th St., NE, 142, Conover, was arrested at his work place and transferred into custody Monday night around 10:30 p.m. according to HPD Investigator Dustin Nowatka.

Home destroyed

Propst Crossroads fire department responded to a fully involved mobile home fire at 3799 Scronce Road in Vale at 7:15 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Units en-route to the scene observed heavy black smoke from the vicinity and called for mutual aid assistance from Union VFD out of Lincoln County.

Lady Bucs ready for NJCAA tournament appearance

The Catawba Valley Community College volleyball team is prepared for its sixth appearance in the National Junior College Athletic Association National Tournament in Toledo, Ohio.

The Lady Bucs (34-0) plays Parkland College (42-7) in the opening game of the tournament on Thursday at 9 a.m.

Newton-Conover eliminated; Hickory in 3A title game

The Newton-Conover and Hickory soccer teams competed on Tuesday for a chance to play in their respective title games.

The Red Devils dropped a heart breaker to Cuthbertson, while Hickory won a tight game against Charlotte Catholic.

Sessions scores 21 as Bobcats beat Wizards 92-76

Bobcats coach Mike Dunlap talked throughout the offseason about changing the culture in the organization and building a winning atmosphere in Charlotte.

Apparently his players were listening.

BREAKING: Bobcats trade Carroll, acquire Warrick

The Charlotte Bobcats have acquired forward Hakim Warrick from the New Orleans Hornets in exchange for guard Matt Carroll, the team announced on Tuesday.

Currently in his eighth NBA season, the 6-foot-9 Warrick has career averages of 9.5 points and 4.1 rebounds in 499 games for the Grizzlies, Bucks, Bulls, Suns and Hornets.

Geneva Bost, 88, of Sykesville, Md. died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2012 at Golden Living Nursing Center in Westminster, MD. She was born Feb. 27, 1924 in Maiden, and was the daughter of the late Klutz L. and Cora Elizabeth Williams.

Teen Miss N.C. Kleeberger gives back

Most high school students took Monday off to relax at home, but Teen Miss North Carolina Katie Kleeberger took the day to give back to the community.

The 14 year-old, Newton-Conover High School freshman and Conover native spent her day working at Corner Table Soup Kitchen in Newton.

Church bell dedicated

Holy Cross Lutheran Church dedicated a new church bell Sunday that replaced the one taken out of service in July.

Pastor Paul FitzPatrick said that the church discovered on July 8 that the bell in the Church’s Bell Tower had broken from its mounts and shattered when it fell.
