On Tuesday, Nov. 20 at 3:40 a.m., officers responded to the area of the 300 block of 19th Ave NE in reference to a call of a shooting. Upon arrival officers located one victim who had been shot. Billy Chad Dellinger, 35 of Hickory was transported to Frye Regional Medical Center where he later died as a result of his injuries.
Tuesday afternoon at Newton Fire Department Station 1 the engine bay looked a little different than a normal day. Instead of maintaining fire equipment, the men were seen putting together children’s bicycles.
Traffic was redirected for half an hour on Wednesday while N.C. Highway Patrol investigated a wreck that sent one driver the the hospital with minor injuries.
Long time local bank president Thomas Watchorn, 64, died Sunday at his residence in Cornelius. Watchorn came to Newton after Loyd Mullinax retired as long time president of Citizens Savings and Loan Association later Citizens Savings Bank.
On Nov. 11, Narcotics Investigators with the Catawba County Sheriff's Office and Newton Police Department conducted a search warrant at the address of 5265 Swinging Bridge Rd. in Conover. As a result of this search warrant, a marijuana growing operation and firearms were seized.
Two former Catawba County high school football standouts took part in Saturday's "Fall Finale" for the Charlotte 49ers football program.
Former Maiden and current UNCC quarterback Matt Johnson, as well as former St. Stephens standout and current 49ers offensive lineman/long snapper Zach Bumgarner, took part in the scrimmage.
The St. Stephens boys basketball team spoiled the debut of Pat Kahny as head coach on Tuesday, knocking off the Blue Devils, 65-20.
