A southern Lincoln County homeowner arrived home around 1:10 p.m. Tuesday to find a car in his driveway and several males standing outside the vehicle. The man called 9-1-1 and reported a crime in progress.
Runners filled Newton's Southside Park Wednesday, Oct. 10, for the 20th Annual United Way Unifour Cross Country Invitational. Thirty-five schools and more than 1,050 runners participated in the annual event.
Catawba Valley Quilters Guild welcomes quilter enthusiasts and shoppers alike during its Oct. 12-14 weekend event at the Metro Convention Center in Hickory. The event starts Friday morning and runs until Sunday afternoon and features quilts, homemade items and supplies for all levels of quilters.

The 20th edition of the United Way Unifour Cross Country Invitational lived up to expectations on Wednesday.
A new boys championship race record was set. Two new individual and team champions were also crowned in the championship races at the event.
The Fred T. Foard soccer team picked up a road conference victory Wednesday against South Caldwell.
Daniel Tomberlin, Kenan Ruffner, Scottie Whitman and Mario Carrillo each scored goals for the Tigers (13-5-1, 4-4-1).
Whitman also recorded an assist on Ruffner's goal.

Panthers announced Wednesday that Pro Bowl center Ryan Kalil is out for the season after suffering a left foot injury.
Kalil was injured in Carolina's 16-12 loss to Seattle, although he continued playing.
Kalil went to see Dr. James Anderson on Tuesday and it was determined he had a Lisfranc injury — torn a ligament that supports the middle of his foot.

Super Bowl champion and Washington Redskins Ring of Fame member Joe Theismann visited Rock Barn Golf & Spa in Conover on Tuesday.
Theismann took part in the 10th Annual Dale Jarrett Celebrity Shootout — part of the 10th Anniversary Greater Hickory Classic week.
During his time in Conover, O-N-E Sports Editor Cody Dalton spoke to Theismann and asked him a couple of questions.
