Flu vaccines available

During the month of October, Catawba County citizens won’t have to look far to find flu shots.

Catawba County Public Health and Catawba County Council on Aging are both holding several flu vaccine clinics throughout the month at different locations.

From a fourth grade student who couldn’t pay attention in class to a 17 year-old professional long driver, Trent Scruggs has come along way. Scruggs started playing golf at age nine, before that he become home schooled. When Scruggs was in the fourth grade he left public school.

Animal Shelter promotes adoptions

The Catawba County Animal Shelter is working hard to adopt out pets while conducting cleaning efforts. The county is continuing its sanitizing routine that happens twice a year in the shelter. The cleaning effort is to prevent outbreaks of disease. The shelter had an outbreak in the fall of 2010, but doesn’t currently have any diseases in the shelter.

Early educators’ conference

The eighth annual Foothills Regional Conference for Early Childhood Educators will be Saturday, Nov. 3,  from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at the Iredell County Agricultural Resources Center, 444 Bristol Drive, Statesville. Cooperative Extension Family and Consumer Sciences agents from Catawba, Iredell and Rowan counties host the award-winning conference.

Thirty-six prep golfers from all around Western North Carolina, including Hickory’s Peter Harrill, above, competed Monday at Rock Barn Golf & Spa’s Jackson Course for a chance to win the Ninth Annual Greater Hickory High School Classic. Maiden's Lilly wins Classic title on scorecard playoff

For only the second time in its history, the Greater Hickory High School Classic was settled on a scorecard playoff.

Tied with a pair of 36s, Maiden's Thomas Lilly and Fred T. Foard's Christian Carpenter were separated by what they shot on the 18th hole.

Lilly's birdie score was better than Carpenter's par, as the Maiden senior golfer became the first Blue Devil to claim the Classic crown.

PREP NOTEBOOK: Lady Indians win 20th match

The St. Stephens volleyball team won its 20th game of the season on Monday, knocking off Freedom in Hickory 25-9, 25-7 and 25-15.

Rebecca Millsaps and Jodi Kerley led Saint (20-1) with seven digs each. Katelyn Houser added 10 assists and five kills.

L-R's Green wins SAC's top defender award again

Lenoir-Rhyne's Michael Green has been named the South Atlantic Conference defensive player of the week, league officials announced on Monday.

Green wins the honor for the second-straight week.

Green, a junior defensive back from Kingsland, Ga., finished with six tackles including two fumble recoveries in L-R's 34-6 win over Brevard last Saturday in Brevard.

Panthers offense goes cold in 16-12 loss to Seahawks

A chilly day at Bank of America Stadium on Sunday foreshadowed a cold performance from the Carolina Panthers offense against the Seattle Seahawks.

The Panthers (1-4) struggled against the No. 2 ranked Seahawks, tallying 190 yards of total offense in a 16-12 loss.

Quarterback Cam Newton completed 41 percent of his passes (12-of-29) for 141 yards and no touchdowns.
