L-R's Green named SAC defensive player of the week

Lenoir-Rhyne's Michael Green was named the South Atlantic Conference football defensive player of the week, league officials announced on Monday afternoon.

Green, a junior safety from Kingsland, Ga., picked off two passes in the first half and finished with eight tackles in L-R's 52-10 victory over North Greenville last Saturday night at home.

Red Devils hosting golf tournament on Oct. 13

Newton-Conover High School is hosting its second annual Athletics Golf Tournament next Saturday, Oct. 13 at River Oaks Golf Club in Statesville.

There will be a 9 a.m. shotgun start for the event. Sign in starts at 8:30 a.m.

The cost per player is $60, which includes lunch.

Mulligans and skirts are also available for purchase.

The company data center will encompass the 48,000 square-foot Center Point shell building in the Claremont International Business Park on Kelly Drive.

Student brings disarmed hand grenade to school

A high school student was charged with a misdemeanor on Friday, Sept. 28.
  
Adam Riley Tadlock, 16, from 4000 Summit Ridge Lane, Denver, was charged with Perpetrating a Hoax Using a False Bomb after bringing a disarmed hand grenade to North Lincoln High School.

During World Rabies Day, Randy Mozer brought his 2-year-old dog, Trouble, to the Catawba County Animal Shelter for a free, one-year rabies vaccination. The shelter had 100 free shots for residents during the Friday event.

Newton to host candidate forum Tuesday

The public is invited to the Meet the Candidates Forum Tuesday 7 p.m.

The event is sponsored by the Catawba County Farm Bureau and prepare voters for the general elections in November. The forum will be held at the Newton-Conover Auditorium located at West 6th Street and North Ashe Avenue.

Maiden man killed in Friday accident

A Maiden man was killed Friday when his vehicle overturned on Herter Road.

N.C. Highway Patrol officials say David Franklin Bivens Jr., 43, of Blackburn Bridge Road, Maiden, was pronounced dead on arrival when first responders arrived at the accident scene.
