Fred Funk went from trepidation to jubilation in one year at the Greater Hickory Classic.
Funk held off a charging Duffy Waldorf and birdied his 18th hole of golf on Sunday to claim the 10th Anniversary GHC title at Rock Barn Golf & Spa.
The win comes one year after injuring his left thumb in last year's Greater Hickory Classic in Conover.
Fred Funk took a one-stroke lead over Larry Mize in the Greater Hickory Classic on Saturday, shooting his second straight bogey-free 6-under 66.
"I really jump-started my round with a save on No. 2," Funk said. "I drove it into the bunker and had to wedge it out for par. Then I made a 30-footer (putt) on the next hole (for birdie), and that got me going."
Jamal Jackson threw two touchdowns and running back Steven Miller racked up 186 all-purpose yards Saturday in Appalachian State's 28-25 win over Samford in Southern Conference action.
Appalachian State (5-2, 3-1) built a 21-10 halftime lead behind Jackson's first touchdown pass of the day, a 48-yarder to Miller.
