Fred Funk leads Greater Hickory Classic by 1 stroke

Fred Funk took a one-stroke lead over Larry Mize in the Greater Hickory Classic on Saturday, shooting his second straight bogey-free 6-under 66.

"I really jump-started my round with a save on No. 2," Funk said. "I drove it into the bunker and had to wedge it out for par. Then I made a 30-footer (putt) on the next hole (for birdie), and that got me going."

Jackson, Appalachian State outlast Samford 28-25

Jamal Jackson threw two touchdowns and running back Steven Miller racked up 186 all-purpose yards Saturday in Appalachian State's 28-25 win over Samford in Southern Conference action.

Appalachian State (5-2, 3-1) built a 21-10 halftime lead behind Jackson's first touchdown pass of the day, a 48-yarder to Miller.

Bears tally 640 total yards, run by Tusculum

The Lenoir-Rhyne football team rolled up a season-high 640 yards of total offense, including 569 on the ground, in a 51-6 Homecoming victory over Tusculum on Saturday afternoon.

Three players rushed for over 100 yards for the Bears (4-2, 2-1), including sophomore halfback Jarrod Spears with a game-high 145 yards as L-R won its third-straight contest.

Red Devils blast Wildcats on "Senior Night"

The Newton-Conover football team honored its senior class the best way it knew how on Friday — by winning impressively.

The Red Devils tallied 396 total yards, including 126 from senior running back Marquis Pope, on their way to blasting Draughn 41-21 at Gurley Stadium.

Indians' Payne inflicts four TDs against Foard in win

"Senior Night" is a special moment for high school students, but for the Fred T. Foard football team, it is a night they want to forget.

St. Stephens running back Marcus Payne scored four touchdowns to lead the Indians to a 35-13 win over the host Tigers on Friday night in Newton.

"They ran the same thing on film" said Foard coach Jason Phelps. "We just could not stop them."

The Maiden football team continue to stay near the top of the Catawba Valley 2A standings with a 14-0 victory against East Burke.

Jake McRee threw a three-yard touchdown pass to Austin Wright for the Blue Devils' first score, while Grant Yowe scored a second half touchdown on a two-yard run.
