HICKORY — The North Carolina police department that solved the killing of a disabled 10-year-old Australian girl now has a portrait of the child to remind them of their duty to protect children.
A resident gave the city's police department the watercolor painting of the freckle-faced girl.
Police Chief Tom Adkins received the painting Friday with investigators who solved Zahra's slaying. Adkins says the painting will be a reminder of the need to protect children by reporting abuse.
STATESVILLE — Iredell County officials released the name of a man who was shot and killed by North Carolina Highway Patrol troopers after they say he fired at officers.
Officials say 45-year-old William D. Miller Jr. was shot to death early Sunday after he had fired at troopers and a sheriff's deputy near Statesville.
Authorities say three troopers and a sheriff's deputy were following up on a reported hit-and-run when a man left the home carrying a weapon. State police say the officers told the man to drop the weapon, and a deputy tried to use a Taser on the suspect.
