Ike Williams, first-year coach for the Lady Red Devils, said heâs used the hurdle as a motivator.
âI call them the âCrazy Eight,ââ Williams said. âThey are on their way to becoming the âGreat Eight.ââ
The encouragement by their new coach is working.
The Lady Red Devils (15-3, 7-1) are in second place in the Catawba Valley 2A heading into Tuesdayâs pivotal home contest against the Lady Trojans of Bandys (17-0, 8-0).

Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is headed to Hawaii.
The Carolina signal caller, the No. 1 overall selection in the 2011 draft, was added to the NFC Pro Bowl squad Monday in place of New Yorkâs Eli Manning.
Manning and the Giants beat the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC championship to advance to Super Bowl XLVI on Feb. 5 in Indianapolis, meaning Manning had to withdraw from the annual all-star game.
Appalachian State wide receiver Brian Quick was chosen to represent the Mountaineers in the 2012 Senior Bowl.
The game, which is scheduled to take place on Jan. 28 at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Ala., features some of the countryâs top senior athletes and potential NFL prospects.
Quick is the second ASU player to play in the game, joining wideout Dexter Jackson, who played in the game back in 2007.
The 6-foot-5-inch Quick leads the program all-time in receiving yards (3,418), receptions (202) and touchdown catches (31).
Donald Grey Wooten, 76, of Vale, died Sunday, Jan. 22, 2012 at his residence. The Wooten family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home & Cremations in Conover.
Joel Dean Bishop, 58, of Newton, died after a lengthy illness Monday, Jan. 23, 2012, at his residence. The Bishop family has entrusted arrangements to Jenkins Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Newton.

Thereâs even a sworn Newton police officer who serves as the courtâs âbailiff.â
However, when the âchargesâ are discussed and the verdict is read, itâs clear this isnât exactly a court room.
âThe jury thinks the defendant should do one day of silent lunch and write their teacher an apology letter,â read Austin Drum, a sixth-grade student at Newton-Conover Middle School and the lead juror at the schoolâs Teen Court recently.â¨
Police are reminding residents to lock their cars after thieves targeted nine different vehicles in Newton over the weekend.
â¨The break-ins all occurred overnight Jan. 20 in the northern part of the city, and Newton Police believe the incidents are related.
â¨No arrests have been made.
Three break-ins occurred at 415 W. 20th St. in Newton.

NEWARK, N.J.â Deron Williams came close to a triple double on Sunday night.
He had 19 points, nine rebounds and 10 assists to lead the New Jersey Nets to a 97-87 victory over the Charlotte Bobcats.
Williams' near triple double would have been the first of the season for the Nets, who improved to 5-12 on the season.
"It was close. I've been close a number of times," Williams said. "It will happen someday."
MarShon Brooks added 20 points for the Nets, while Anthony Morrow added 19 points.
