Behind 18 points each from Dasia Tipps and Kadesha Gibbs, the Newton-Conover girls basketball team improved to 14-3 overall and 6-1 in the Catawba Valley 2A with a 78-28 thrashing of West Caldwell on Tuesday.
Taylor Petty added 16 points for N-C in the victory, while Shynese Whitener scored 11 points.
Draughn 58, Maiden 52
Despite being outscored by four points in the final quarter, the Lady Wildcats edged the Lady Blue Devils in Valdese on Tuesday.
Lauren Duckworth scored a game-high 22 points for Draughn (10-7, 3-4), while Haley Broadwell added 12 points.

After Conover Police found a dead body inside a crashed vehicle Tuesday morning, police investigators say they believe the driver suffered a medical condition that led to a fiery wreck off Reese Drive.
"It appears there was no foul play involved," Conover City Manager Donald Duncan said, adding that the wreck occurred about 9:45 a.m., according to Conover Police investigators. "A gentleman suffered from a medical condition while he was driving, went off the road, impacted a tree and ignited the fuel tank and was burned severely."

A veteran Maiden councilman resigned unexpectedly this week during the townâ€™s regularly scheduled monthly meeting.
Howard Ervin, who has served on the Maiden Town Council since 2005, tendered his letter of resignation Monday night. He said he resigned for personal reasons.

Police Lt. Rick Coffey said Justin Barger was drinking and assaulted his parents.
Coffey said 53-year-old Karen Barger shot her son once with a handgun. He died at the home.
Coffey said police are investigating, and will turn the results of their probe over to District 25 Attorney James C. Gaither Jr. to determine if charges should be filed.
